“How can the people of wealthy countries use their wealth to improve the standard of living for those in poverty, domestically and internationally? And why do these people not do more?”
I wanted to know how so many people can live in absolute poverty, despite modern technology and the incredible wealth of the first world. I have always wanted to do something with my life that allowed me to help others. Ever since traveling through South East Asia I have been very passionate about helping those in poverty. I am a declared political science major, and obviously I am taking lots of classes in the field. Classes in comparative politics will hopefully allow me to understand the differences between the politics of different nations. Through this I can better understand why poor countries are poor. I can also understand the different factors that affect the governing policies of different countries. Classes in international relations will allow me to better understand how nations interact with each other. This will allow me to better comprehend how impoverished countries interact with wealthy ones. Hopefully, I will be able to understand how we can help poor nations do better economically. I would also like to use these classes as a chance to explore the reason why the current amount of international aid to poverty is so inadequate. A degree in political science will also eventually allow me to pursue a graduate degree, or a career that will allow me to make a significant difference in the world. I also plan to take advantage to the some of the incredible internship opportunities offered through Quinnipiac. Ideally I would like to work with a charity or a government entity that would help me to gain experience and knowledge relating to my guiding
