First Year College Students Facing Challenges
The transition from high school to college may be a challenge for many students. The challenges first year college students’ face as seen in FanGirl, and from research done by college and university professors and psychologists. The challenges that institutions face that result in college students facing problems are promoting a deeper system of student attrition, providing learning and involvement opportunities and providing the support students need to succeed.
The first challenge institutions face are providing a deeper system of student attribution. Student attribution is a process in which individuals explain the causes of behavior and events of students. According to the article “Taking Student Success Seriously: Rethinking the First Year of College” the author Vincent Tinto explains that there are six conditions to help with student success. “Research points to six conditions within institutions that are supportive of student success; namely commitment, expectations, support feedback, involvement, and learning” (Tinto). As a result to the lack of student attribution some students do not take their academics seriously and do not graduate. These problems can be because students have problems back home, or just do not have the motivation for academics and only care about partying.
