I choose to speak to Mrs. Williams for my first service learning paper. She is retired, married, and a mother of two children. At age 11 she started work on a plantation to help earn money for her family, after her father’s sudden death. Working at such a young age prevented her from receiving an education. She feels ashamed for not being able to read or write, which kept her from building friendships because she did not want anyone to know of lack of education. She still persevered through life, raising two children, received a driver’s license, one child graduated from college, and she retired after working 29 years with the same company with a pension. Here are some questions that I asked Mrs. Williams in order to gain some insight to her

Growing up, Williams always knew she was going to accomplish all her goals, despite the pre-civil rights era she was brought up in, “Not a common message for a young black woman raised before the civil-rights era. But she believed it, and now looking back on a career in nursing that has spanned more than half a century, she is justifiably proud of her accomplishments against formidable odds” (Hannk). It is incredible to see how determined she has always been despite the struggles they went through. She was raised in a family who were very supportive of her. She was inspired by her mother who taught her the importance of staying actively involved, “her involvement was based on how activism and collectivism can impact change” (Jody).…

“The magic happens when you step outside your comfort zone.” This proverb sums up everything I went through when I recently attended the Air Force Academy’s Summer Seminar in July. While there, I was pushed well beyond my limits. We, the attendees, did strenuous physical training sessions at roughly a mile above sea level, woke up before the sun rose, attended sample classes, and studied tons of military knowledge while learning about the Air Force Academy and the admission process. It was truly a challenge being there, and I loved every minute of it!…
