The first Elizabeth was born in the year 1533. Her father was Henry VIII, who married six different times. Elizabeth’s mother was his second wife. Her name was Anne Boleyn. When Elizabeth was only two years old, Anne Boleyn was accused of unfaithfulness and other serious crimes. The accusations were probably not true, but Henry believed them and had Anne Boleyn executed. Elizabeth grew up without a mother. Much of her girlhood was very unhappy.
King Henry died when Elizabeth was 14 years old. First her half-brother, who was only 10 years old, became king. He died while he was still a boy, at the age of 16. Then Elizabeth’s half-sister Mary, who was seventeen years older than she was, became queen.
