For one to understand how reality is viewed by first and second order cybernetics, one first has to define what reality is. Reality is defined as a real existence or actual being as opposed to imaginary, idealised or false. It is something that actually happens in real life and is comparable with fact (Rooney, 2001; Brandford, 1987). With this given definition, it is safe to say that reality is something that we can observe and be a part of.
According to First order cybernetics, “reality is seen as out there and one is able to observe it without being influenced by the process of observation”(Becvar & Bevar, 2014). Reality is objective in simple cybernetics, this means that the therapist is not a part of the system. The therapist observes from the outside and does not become a part of the family system. This is something the first order cybernetics therapist could adopt, a way of building a relationship with the members of the family which will not make them feel inferior to the therapist. The therapist can build this relationship whilst being objective.
In conclusion, both approaches should have an objective view which helps them stay in line with the ethical codes. They should both have stable and trusting relationships between the therapist and members of the family.
