First Online Course Analysis

1) Is this your first online course you've taken? If so, how did your expectations meet with the reality of the course? If it's not your first, how did this course compare to others?

This is not my first online course. During high school, I utilized the online college courses available to me. This course compared well to the other courses I have taken. The expectations were not unrealistic and the course was fun to be a part of.

2) What did you like about the course? What, specifically, did you dislike about the course? I liked the pieces of literature we read throughout the course. There were many different types and I did not feel any of them were too abstract to understand. While some of them definitely took more time to understand than others, they were still good stories. I also felt the variety of stories was great. Sometimes I think teachers can become bias without even noticing it and choose only stories they like, but I did not notice that in this course. I did not dislike anything about the course.

What would you suggest to future students to prepare for the course?

When speaking with future students, I would stress to them that they need to do all of the readings. I know it is common for students to slack and attempt quizzes and writings without reading the literature, but that is just not possible. Another tip I would have is to make sure you are not waiting until last minute to work on the class. To prepare for the course, I would suggest students get the required book early to be able to skim through it and prepare for the course.

4) What did you feel you gained by taking the course online? What did you feel you sacrificed by taking it

This course was defiantly different than what I originally thought it was going to be about. I think that every unit provided interesting topics as well as informative information regarding deviant and criminal acts/behaviors. The different theories to deviant and criminal acts/behaviors were very interesting to me because I like to learn how people do what they do. I also find it very interesting that as society changes, so does their thoughts on what is considered the “norm”, which then changes what is considered deviant. One suggestion that I would make is to have a textbook for the course.…

Before taking music 111, I only know little about music with few preconceptions. First preconceived idea which I hold was players who can play by ear are naturally genius or just a special gift. However, from the lecture, “Oral Tradition” and Lilliestam’s article I got the idea how the players can play by ear. In his article, "On Playing By Ear", Lars Lilliestam compared music to spoken language. He described as if we learn a variety of phrases, we can use the language in certain situation.…
