This stage appears between the age of twelve and eighteen months. After the age of one, children recognize that there is a link between sounds and meaning. During this stage they can utter single units such as "milk" or "cat". Therefore, many of these units are used in the sense to name objects and to convey messages that the children aren 't able to express at this stage. They may use words in ways that are too limited or too wide. By using a single word children can express complex functions and ideas. For example, the child 's word dada could mean 'Where is daddy?
