Throughout elementary, middle, and high school there are many examples of how students self-esteem and willingness to learn are stifled by sarcastic comments and disapproving actions by teachers that further foster peers perceptions. It can be easy to pick out academic scholars, as they are frequently the ones that are praised for their success. While students who struggle, teachers try to rationalize why is student is not succeeding and it is ultimately somehow the student’s fault. In the classroom, students come to this…

And because of this, the students might know, or have a better idea, of what they want later on in life or sooner. “Today’s high school students are faced with a world of new challenges that are just thrown at them randomly: like career choices, their own family, and even their morality” (Anna Baker). And because of this Anna believes that if the students have a stronger sense of who they are then most of these decisions will be so much easier. “Each student should learn to accept oneself (and then be able to answer questions about themselves) like decisions and choices on, and in, life. Answering these questions is starting the student on the road to being able to bear one’s own, individual, responsibility” (Anna Baker).…

Have you ever felt that you are not good enough? Recent research studies suggest that many freshmen are facing the very real fear of failure. Incoming students wonder if they will fit in and do well enough to stay in a university. In his New York Times article, “Conquering the Freshman Fear of Failure,” David L. Kirp explains that he believes several freshman doubt themselves, their social skills, and their ability to do well in college. In this article, David L. Kirp effectively argues that this cycle of doubt can make students more likely to drop out of school and that universities need to step in and encourage students through his use of ethos, logos, and pathos.…

Like I have said before, I am proud to be a First Generation student. I feel like we are the minority, though. I am glad that I have a classroom full of people that I have something in common with. With being the minority, it is sometimes hard to make connections with people. I feel like some people look down on First Generation students and others think that it is very cool.…

When we are young and commit mistakes, it is easy to blame on parents, teachers, or siblings in order to mentally make ourselves feel better about our own fault. In college, I will not be able to blame anybody for missing registration to classes, or missing an important deadline. Taking full responsibility for my actions will give me a hard time in my college career, since I have never been completely by myself. However, without a doubt, acting responsibly is the quality that gives meaning to our lives and allows us to develop personality, establish profound relationships, and get an advantage in the labor market. Additionally, the only way to overcome the fear of taking responsibility of myself is to start realizing that things will change…

Though I join many others in lunging out into the world for the first time, I am doing so without having a father or mother to tell me how to tackle the college experience.…

Coming to Roadmap class with Mr. Whalen was tons of fun because he made everything interesting so that me and my classmates would be engaged. This course required every student to read a novel written by Ken Bain titled, What the Best College Students do. At first, I did not want to read this novel because it seemed to long and boring. The professor connected the novel perfectly to class activities and discussions that I enjoyed reading it. I would agree that Bain wanted to demonstrate students that they all have goals and potentials to meet.…

Studies have shown that just about 50% of first generation college students’ parents have had a high school education or received a lower education than that (Trombley). First generation college students have a harder time throughout their years in school compared to non-first generation college students as showed in a study. Michael Stebleton and Krista Soria conducted a study examining about 60,000 students from six different colleges to analyze the difference between first generation and non-first generation college students. They studied their academics along with their skills and feelings of coping with different situations. The study found that “first generation students weren’t as academically prepared as others” (Stebleton), meaning that compared to others in college they weren’t reaching the same grades.…

I firmly believe that it was important for the incoming freshmen to know how to stand up for themselves, both socially and academically, in high school or no one else will. In “You're not Special”, the speaker reveals to those listening to him that, “the fulfilling life, the distinctive life, the relevant life, is an achievement, not something that fell into your lap because you're a nice person or mommy ordered it from the caterer.” We decided to draw from this quote as when you're in high school, everything should be an “achievement” and much like others have “mommy ordering” things, we believe in high school you need to speak up for yourself without “mommy”. After drawing from this speech we decided to explain to the incoming freshmen that, “it is important to learn to be your own self advocate in high school, and to develop a good work…

When you as a customer have an issue with the service at your local grocery store, you might ask to speak to the supervisor; when the supervisor addresses your issue you expect for her to be an educated individual speaking in a professional method. If they talk to you like you were one of their friends, one might think they are not taking you seriously or you would perhaps one might imagine the business as an incompetent one for not being able to hire a decent manager. Similar to a competent manager showing you the respect you deserve as a customer; a college student should also show the respect of a good student towards the professor by trying to write in their best Standard Academic English as…
