First-Gen Student Challenges

It means that I have persevered through the difficult challenges that first gen students face. We have overcome the college process without any help from our family and are very fortunate to attend college. My family has valued education and put me in the mindset to keep up my education. I am the first in my family that is given a higher education opportunity allowing me to seek better jobs in the service sector. As a first-generation student, I am able to relate less than the mass majority of students at colleges. First generation students are a small percentage of college students. Secondly, we are immigrants and have less typical experience such as camping, or much college visiting. Thirdly, a majority of first-gen students come from similar areas and have similar backgrounds. This being said, I am from NYC and many of my friends from NYC did not have the need to drive a car. I am proud to be a first generation student.

It feels awkward when the question is “where are you from?” The people I hang around with are also first gen students and would say New York City. Some more prevalent challenges would be things like traveling out to eat and people who have cars on campus who can easily get off campus. However, I have found a very great liking in the food on campus and the campus as a whole. Many of the international college students on my campus hate the food because they were raised differently. To me, coming to the campus is an upgrade from my underfunded public high school, Bronx Science that was full to its capacity. Coming to Babson is a way better experience compared to my 6 AM wake- up schedule and hour long commutes to high
