Sitting in the busy hustle and bustle of a Friday Night in Columbia Mo. is ARTlandish Gallery, a small art gallery that allows local artists to showcase their work for the college town. ARTlandish has taken full advantage of the impressive art scene that Columbia boasts, and it has done so in the form of First Friday.

ARTlandish sits in the middle of Downtown Columbia, snuggled in between a couple buildings and overlooking E. Walnut Street. ARTlandish has been in Columbia for six years, and was trying to find a way to break out in the competitive art scene. A short four years ago, they found the idea that would allow them to fully breakout, and that breakout came in the form of First Friday. Since First Friday has come into fruition, they

But this isn’t your typical art gallery, one where you walk the walls and look at art that is roped off with a do not touch sign. This is different, it is unique, and that is what makes ARTlandish so special.

Manager Karen Tiedye has been in Columbia for a long time and she quickly came to recognize the opportunity at hand. “I’ve been here for 29 years and Columbia has always had a killer art scene. I think First Friday takes advantage of that scene.” That art scene coupled with the trendy ways they have brought in more visitors has turned this quiet gallery into a madhouse once a month,

First Friday thrives by turning this art gallery into a social event with some beautiful art showcased on the side. They have fire spinning out in the driveway and musicians and their music echoing sweet music throughout the cozy building. Artists have spaces where they get to engage with customers and those at the event, telling them about their art and what into it. But the biggest hit just very well might be the coffee downstairs or the free wine for those 21 and

Born in 1969, Stormie Mills is one of the most respected contemporary artists of Australian culture. On his visit to New York in 1986, his inspiration skyrocketed by the work of street artists, Jenny Holzer and John Fekner. John Fekner’s stenciled messages of urgency and despair contributed to the Perth-based artist’s style. Mill’s new found passion in spray-painting lead him into a career that has taken him around the world.…

The venture was directed in the Achievement First Endeavor Middle School, a contract school in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Paula Scher and whatever remains of the Pentagram group (one of our 10 Most Innovative Design Firms), officially experienced with open spots because of undertakings like these library paintings, handled the ordinarily beige universe of lockers, tile, and block, and transformed it into something splendid and striking. The change is quite simple–no significant development was attempted, and the venture for the most part comprised of enormous, clear representation everywhere throughout the school, from the dividers to the cafeteria, the rec center to the stairwells. pentagram design The illustrations are for the most part…

Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery I had the pleasure of visiting the Artsy Fartsy art gallery in Carson City. It was a very cozy, intimate, and knowledgeable experience. There gallery itself was very small and there was very calm, serine music playing. I was the only person in the gallery besides the owner for my whole visit, so I got to ask questions and get knowledge about this gallery I normally wouldn’t have.…

Two thousand five hundred eighty-seven. I could take an eight-hour flight or a casual thirty-seven-hour drive, but no matter what, I am still two thousand five hundred eighty-seven miles away from my home in New Haven, Connecticut. Being a college freshman, trying to juggle class, homework, projects, studying, sleeping, eating, and athletics; finding the travel time to go home is an almost impossible task. Add in the cost of the $600 flights round trip and there is no chance a student can go visit home when they feel a little homesick. I on the other hand had never even fathomed being homesick from the frozen tundra I called home.…

n an effort to bring out the artists' and expose more people to art in Philadelphia in the 80's Jeff Harris opened up the doors of the Boston street art gallery, with full faith that there is potential to be reaped in Philadelphia. The artists of Philadelphia now have a chance to get public exposure at the Boston street art gallery, where Mr. Harris will reach out to those who have excellent art and artistic energy, but very little exposure in the art community. “Many new artists interested in making something of themselves find a niche outside of Old City as creators due to the cost of living and community," Harris said. "Boston Street Art Gallery is a direct representation of the artists community of that area demonstrating the American Dream to arise independently."…

Structure and language In the book Seven Days in the Art World, Thornton dished up seven different " day-in-the-life" case studies in the contemporary art world: a Christie 's auction, art school seminar at Cal Arts, a day at Artforum, a visit to Takashi Murakami 's studio, the Art Fair in Basel, and the Turner Prize. She cleverly divided the book into these seven day-in-the-life chapters and also captured the subtle power dynamics that activate each of these…

This was definitely the most simple of the displays put here because all of the paintings were lifelike and easy to decipher because they were also more straightforward and seldom open to interpretation unlike the photos in Concentrations 60. Overall, visiting the Dallas Museum of Art was a new and exciting experience because its exhibits really opens one’s eyes as to how art alone reflects different periods of time, cultures, and places around the world and evolves as does humanity. Moreover, it shows how art does not come from culture, but creates it and often evinces the psyche of its…

One foot rooted in urban Puerto Rican heritage and the other having been later immersed in the Southern black experience as an adult, I have learned to merge the conceivably disparate cultures of my family. Each afforded me a unique point of view, developing the self-assurance that has empowered me to succeed in the face of adversity. Being of Puerto Rican descent in the inner city kept the lack of financial stability of my youth in view and motivated me to pursue my education. As a black American female I learned the value of diversity, having experienced first-hand the misconceptions that can shape in a homogeneous environment. For instance from being called “too much of a free-spirited city girl,” in the country to later being “too old-fashioned…

Graffiti was once labeled as street art which was frequently a prominent problem in urban cities; defacing or “tagging” public and private property was against the law. As time as evolved, so has the street art culture. Today, street art is one of most sought after and creative outlets for local artists. The culture around street art can be interesting in the fact that artists build their names and reputation with one piece of work at a time; sometimes when it starts to take over the city it gets the attention it has been wanting. Street art is now very innovative featuring many different art styles and often makes a commentary on a social issue and if it does not, then it was created to help change the city.…
