Journal One: Pre-class entry

I always was fascinated by New York City since I have always thought of it as the capital of the world. I grew up in Queens, NY so I was no stranger to the city. Every Christmas or special occasion my family and I visited Manhattan and every one of those visits I fell in love with the lights and the atmosphere. I loved knowing that there was so much to do at my doorstep. So when I entered my second semester of my freshman year I knew that I wanted to learn about the city that was just a 30 minute drive away and this course would give me that chance.

I knew that it wouldn’t be easy to get into the course since it is always the first class at Molloy College to be filled and I was right. However, I always knew everything happened for a reason and was optimistic that maybe one day my goal of learning about the greatest city in the world would come true. The city life was made to look so enticing that people wouldn’t be able to refuse. Once people arrived in the cities and try to settle down, however, they found that the city is not the life that they had envisioned. Drugs, alcohol, and gangs were on a rise. The streets were as dirty as the politicians, and women were meant to live at home with their parents, awaiting a courtship from a gentleman worthy enough to meet the standards of the girl’s family. However, women started leaving their parents in search of excitement in the city, only to dive into the dangerous life the cities held.…

Journal Entry 1 Last year and the year before that I felt like an outsider. It wasn’t because no one liked me, or I ate lunch by myself. I wasn’t the “normal” situation of being that random kid in the group. It was more that I have so many parts of my personality that differ when it comes to being fully a part of a clique. For example, I love going shopping and playing sports, but I love all things nerdy.…

Personal statement The year 2004 marked a time in my family’s history in which we took a substantial step forward by coming to the United States. Before that, we lived through and experienced a lot of unspeakable things. Originating in Somalia, my parents understood that it was a place where nothing could be achieved. Civil war broke out, devastating hundreds upon thousands of lives, including several of my family members. Corruption infected the government, military, and all forms of law enforcement.…

It’s 0500 in the morning, and Taylor is getting ready for her first clinical as a paramedic student. Taylor is 5’2, looks as though she is 12, and has a heart larger than life. When people would ask why she chose the career field she is in, she would always respond with a smile, “I’m an adrenaline junkie, and this gives me a fix like no other.” People often wonder what inspires people like her to do what they do for people they don't know, and it all comes back down to something as simple and being the light in the dark, the calm in the storm, and hope amongst the chaos. Working in a field that is so demanding of your energy, your time, and your emotions, can really drain someone.…

Unlike many of my peers, my life story is slightly different. Many of my peers share the story of living in a single parent home, being homeless, violence, and poverty. However, in my case, living in a two parent household is strange to hear about to my peers. For me, living in a two parent household means more work because of my desire to receive a full scholarship. Upon my research, I noticed that many of my older peers would receive better college financial opportunities because of their life experiences.…

Field Experience Working as a Para educator in the Mt. Pleasant School District had opened my understanding about how important it is the job of a teacher. As I observed Mrs. Ensminger performed her duties, it has confirmed my conviction that a teacher is a teacher because they do not see their duties as a job it is a calling. Mrs. Ensminger, a level 1 special education teacher, is already at school no later than 7:15 am. Before school even starts she is already coordinated with core class teachers what she need to work on every individual student under her care. First period in her class is Science.…

Throughout much of the research I did regarding the diversity within Harrisonburg High School, I found that many of the numbers accurately depicted what I saw during my first Field Experience. Harrisonburg High School as well as Harrisonburg city in general, are very diverse areas and are home to a plethora of different people with various backgrounds. The graphs above are just a small portion of the great variety of people who attend Harrisonburg High School. The first graph illustrates the different ethnicity groups the students of Harrisonburg High are a part of. The data was collected by the school district and only includes six subgroups, one of which has a population of zero (Hawaiian).…

I finally saw the the beautiful sun for the first time without having to bend my head back as far as I could since I had been in New York. It shone down brightly, warming my skin and glimmering off the glass of the skyscrapers in the near distance. I could finally feel the soft breeze wrap around me and not get deflected from the buildings. I watched the people from the city enter the park and watched as their city attitudes give way to the magical ambiance of the park. I closed my eyes and took it all in, and I could’ve stayed on top of that rock for…

During my preoperative experience I noticed many safety checks were in place, not only for the patient, but also for the doctors, nurses, and surgical technicians. Upon entering the room during my perioperative experience, I immediately noticed steps in place that were being utilized to protect everyone within the room. All of the instruments were sterile. Nurses and surgical technicians were counting down to the very last suture to make sure all of the supplies were present. Everything touching the patient or being used during the procedure for the patient was sterile and if the items were accidentally contaminated, then more sterile gloves were put on to preserve the sterile field that had been broken.…

My personal experience and take away from English 111 was what I expected it would be before I started the course. No, there was no “life changing” moment for me from this course and I honestly I can’t say I am a better or worse citizen for taking this class, but I can say my writing skills have improved, and that I feel more confident in my writing than prior to taking this course. Writing has and continues to be a challenge for me, I have no illusion that I will ever be a “perfect” or even a “good” writer for that matter, but because some of things I learned in how to prepare and to write an essay I feel I’m a much improved writer. Specifically the topics covered from the first module of this course help my development.…
