When observing a special education classroom I am not only observing the class, but I am observing a glimpse into my future as a teacher. I was privileged enough to observe a multi-needs intermediate classroom with students who range from eight to ten year olds at Hope D. Wall School who have moderate to server learning disorders and physical handicaps. The purpose of the multi-need classroom is for the teacher to assess which path the student will take after the year is over. For an example some students might need more intensive guidance during their education, while other students attend life skills classes in order to prepare for life outside of school. While I was observing the class, I was fortunate enough to witness the students participate…

It was the beginning of high school, the start of a new chapter in my life; after coming into the school, the mall looked like the feeding of the five thousand. St. Thomas More has over a thousand students, and every single one was there on that first day, trying to find the way to their new classes just like me. Walking through the halls of St. Thomas More with the unfamiliar smell of the classrooms reminded me of what lies ahead. I thought it was going to be difficult, because I wouldn’t see anyone I know. Fortunately, some of my old friends from St. Pius were in my gym class, so I was glad that I would not be alone in gym class.…

In the short story, “First Day of School” by R.V. Cassill, it is about a boy named John who is going to start a school year at an all-white high school for the first time and for the end of segregation of schools. If the schedules, routines, and transitions are planned beforehand and students know what to expect, I will be setting myself up for a classroom with much greater success. Lastly, I was again reminded of the importance of relationships. In my own classroom someday, I will strive to develop connections with each and every one of my students. If this is done, managing my classroom will come much more easily.…
