The first attack was lead by Peter the Hermit, when he lead 20,000 commoners from Cologne, Germany towards the “Holy Land”. The crusaders traveled through the Rhine Valley and arriving at Speyer where they slaughtered almost every Jew. This was the first major slaughtering of the Jews by the Crusaders. They continue along their route and come across Semin and Belgrade. They conquer and sack these cities forcing Byzantine forces to retreat towards Nish. The crusaders follow the forces towards Nish and meet with them there. Though they are able to take the city they suffer from a loss of almost a quarter of their troops dead and many more injured. He set off with an army of 40,000 trained soldiers. He later arrives in Constantinople and would become the primary leader of the First Crusade. This made it a largely French sided war and the current occupants of the Holy Lands started to refer to the Europeans as “Franks”. The fourth army of the Crusaders arrive at Constantinople lead by German King Henry IV and brought the total amount of soldiers to approximately 50,000 knights and 500,000 footmen. During this time the friendship between the Europeans and the Byzantines start to deteriorate and Godfrey De Bouillon leads attack towards the Byzantines and leads an army towards the Byzantine Imperial Palace at Blachernae. Bohemond I joins the Crusaders but, is not welcome in Constantinople because of his father, Robert Guiscard, who had earlier invaded parts of the Byzantine Empire. The final forces arrive in Constantinople which were the Normans led by Duke Robert of Normandy. The Normans consisted of 7,000 knights and 60,000 infantry.
