First Church Observation

The feel First United Methodist was very church feeling. When you first walked in you immediately wanted to stand up straighter and make sure you looked your best. The people there were very homely and smiled and greeted you with open arms. This made me feel at home right away, unlike I thought it was going to be. When worship began it was like nothing I had expected to hear or see. The music that was played consisted of old hymns and some modern worship. But it was nothing compared to the high energy loud praise and worship that I have become accustomed to. There were lots of people raising there hands and swaying back and forth listening singing and praising as one. Although some of the songs may have been old the instruments were not. The instruments were all modern and played mostly by younger to middle aged men and women. When it came time for the pastor to preach he did so in a very moving …show more content…
The church was very salome and when you entered you could tell that they were there for worship and prayer and not much else. The church had a very defined and structured service and those who regularly attended seemed to know the drill. The services the communion the prayer all of it was structured. The prayer was the most interesting part the priest who was wearing the white robes asked for those to confess and to be forgiven for their sins. And gave lots of silent time for the congregation to pray and think. Worship was hymns and very foreign to the high energy and loud praise at the church that I attended. He covered the teachings and the communion was then offered the priest broke of the the bread blessed it and then gave it out to those who were baptised into the church the whine was for adults to drink and was in a golden cup that everyone who wanted a drink took a drink out of it. The people there were very nice and greeted us at the door but after that not very much more interaction

Spanish Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 1. What happened during the services? I arrived at the church a few minutes prior to the service and I was greatly surprised by how well attended the service was. There were dozens of families in a spectrum of Sunday best and work-stained denim jeans and nearly every person wore a yellow and white vest with a red cross embroidered on the lapel. At the entrance there was a small dipping well and although there was no water in it at the moment, (most likely due to the sizeable crowd) people still placed their fingers in the dry well and crossed themselves before entering the chapel and before sitting, they would cross themselves again.…

Forced out of their synagogues for several doctrinal disagreements, early Christians, who were predominately Jewish, began gathering in the only place they could for worship, each others homes. Although the exclusion from temple worship was meant to bring the new sect of Judaism known as Christianity to an end, the first century house church became an incubator for the infant faith. Communion being such an essential aspect of early Christian worship, breaking bread together was primarily their reason for gathering. Paired with the significance of the Eucharist, the novel belief that God’s salvation was available to anyone provided an opportunity for the most scandalous and important practice pertaining to the house church of early Christians.…

There is a formal feeling about the service, but not something that impairs the ability to worship by clouding the point of our worship. As I sat in the back pew, I paid close attention to see if I spotted anything that might be particularly weird. Instead, I found the whole atmosphere to be fairly nostalgic and no-so-different from that with which I had grown up. After visiting that first time, I am definitely considering at least one or two more visits during the semester to better acquaint myself with the Presbyterian…

There were many different times throughout the service in which someone, the priest or the person who read scripture, said something and the congregation responded. Similarly, there was more than one prayer that was said out loud from memory. Another ritual in the Catholic church that does not carry over into many Protestant churches is kneeling in the pews during certain times of prayer. Likewise, the Eucharist, or communion, in Catholic Mass was another ritual I was unfamiliar with. Though I have participated in communions in Protestant churches for much of my life, I had never seen it happen the way it did in Mass.…

After the service, I went and talked to the priest who was Fr. Charles and he gave me a brief rundown on what the difference between Catholicism and Episcopalian is and it really was eye-opener because the two are very similar. After the service, I was approached by two different people asking me where I was from and talking about the service and what their story was and why they attended St. Hilary’s. One thing that was brought up was that this church is called a “Broad Church” because it accepts all people of the different sections of Christianity like Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, and etc. I thought that was pretty cool.…
