This is a case study about Dave (FYI: all names including the student, parents, teachers, and administrator(s) have been changed to protect anonymity and confidentiality for all parties). Dave is an 11th grade student enrolled in several honors courses. He has been labeled as a gifted/talented student by his school district. He is 16 years old and is African-American. Dave is and has been actively involved in extra-curricular activities most notably band. He appears normal physically with no physical attributes which make him stand out from his peers. He is gifted academically, but at times he does not always apply himself to his studies and/or homework. Dave lives with both of his parents and he seems to be in a happy, safe, and nurturing home environment. No tension was observed between his parents in the interview with them and no evidence was found which reflected that he has anything but a normal ‘home life’. Dave has two older brothers, one older sister, and one younger sister. As such, he is the fourth of five children of Marquis and Bertha Longbottom. Dave has the ability to think logically, break down, and sequentially work though an issue. In the attached document (Document C), one can see the logical thinking on Dave’s pre-calculus test. Each of the three sections of the test become progressively more difficult and yet Dave clearly demonstrates his understanding of the topic and his ability to break down the problems (especially with his work on the side in section two of the document) and logically deduce the correct answer. In section three of that document, Dave is able to take his knowledge, demonstrated from sections one and two, and both verbally, analytically, and logically break down each aspect of the problem and get them all right. The author tells one such example of Sarah Miller, while in high school Sarah would often skipped classes to go out with her friends, but when the time came to buckle down and work on improving her grades, the school was reluctant to help her and instead offered her to quit school. Although he is a great student his father Mr. Hartig states that Sam is “ bored almost to tears” because Sam is not intellectually challenged. Mr. Hartig believes a solution to his son’s situation would be for him to attend DISD’s Vanguard school, one of which Sam tested almost a perfect score and is clearly qualified for.     The case study focuses on a young, ten-year old boy, Gayle (Demos &Foshay 2009). Gayle struggles with reading and because of this the school put a lot of stress and focus on reading to try and help him (Demos &Foshay 2009). When a lot of pressure is put on a student to well in a certain subject however, it can push the student’s achievement can go one of two ways. According the case study, the young boy started to exemplify a surge of irritation towards reading (2009). The school and his family, and Gayle himself agreed for him to go through testing and interviews to see if they could identify a learning disability, which turned out to be a diagnosis of dyslexia and comprehension (Demos & Foshay 2009). Interviews are important during testing because they can tell more about a child then some tests. In Gayle’s interview he talked a lot about his likes for certain sports and activities outside of school.     First and foremost, Dee had wanted Sean placed in an inclusion program because she was afraid he was not getting the social stimulation and experiences necessary to live in the so called real world. She felt his former school did not pay enough attention to social skills. Also, Dee felt that Sean’s teachers had lower standards for his success at the contained special education school and prematurely determined what his future capabilities were. In the inclusion classroom, Sean’s academics were definitely lacking compared to the other children and remained lacking at the end of the year. If Sean had more pull-out or resource instruction available in specific subject areas such as reading and writing, that he would have improved more academically at the completion of the school year. Sean’s placement did not have an entirely positive effect on his academics, but with slight adaptations to the program, Sean could advance well. His inclusion placement was successful in its development of Sean’s social skills.
