I decided to take a friend and try out a firing range that had some extensive renovations completed recently. Previous visits were a disappointment, to say the least, but the new management had promised a new look and new experience. It was a quasi-private range that required membership and residency in the village to use. Residents could bring guests for an additional fee. Part of the property owners dues that residents paid to the village were used for the renovations and subsequent upkeep. The fee for 3 hours at the range for a resident was five dollars.
On certain days of the month, the local police department used the range for officer qualifications and was thus closed to the residents.

We had suspected from the onset that he was an instructor in name only, and this was verified by the individual.
We proceeded to inform all parties of common safety rules and typical customs of a firing range. The party that had brought what they thought was their own private instructor appeared to distance themselves from him after hearing my friends short, but to the point speech about range safety rules. People were nodding and it seemed were ready to learn.
With a few exceptions, people understood and immediately instituted some of the rules. Those oddballs that thought it was their private kingdom were encouraged to leave and some did so kicking at the stones on their way to their vehicles.
A firing range without a range master is not one you want to visit unless you come with a group that understands the rules and customs and are willing to defer to more experienced and professional shooters like my
