Sublime: The Right Way We all listen to music, but do we always listen and understand the lyrics? When you listen to a song for the first time, you’re just getting a feel for the song, and you enjoy the beat. The next time you listen to the song, you actually try to listen to the words. You start to understand what they are saying, and find lines you like the most and figure out what the artist means.…
In 1976, the Swedish group ABBA ravished the world with their hit song “Dancing Queen.” Even after 30 years since its exposition at King Carl Gustaf’s ball, the song remains a favorite in dance clubs. Mixed with pop-operatic harmonies and inspiration to the dance rhythm in George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby," as well as the drumming on Dr. John's 1972 album “Dr. John's Gumbo”, ABBA is able to convey an elated feeling of limitless joy and highlights the greatest music of the disco era. Through a beautifully woven blend of uplifting, empowering lyrics and a sophisticated melody scattered with heart-tugging high notes, “Dancing Queen” celebrates the carefree innocence of youth.…
The fiend fire could not be stopped. The doors that would free the six-hundred workers were locked shut, imprisoning the young girls in a man-made flaming hell. The manager attempted to use the fire hose to extinguish it, but the hose was rotted and its valve was rusted shut. Running from the incinerator, many stuffed themselves into the two freight elevators, operated by Gaspar Mortillaro and Joseph Zito who both returned to the inferno over and over, saving a hundred and fifty people. Still, many could not fit on the elevator, and thus, they tried to slide down the cable or jump down the shaft, meeting their deaths.…
On the other hand the lyrics, “Many precede and many will follow. A young girl’s dream no longer hollow,” inspires people to believe in their own dreams, and do anything to achieve their…
On the evening of March, the fifth, it being a Monday, several soldier of the 29th Regiment committed brutal acts of bloodshed and violence against several of our young men while under the command of Captain Preston. There are those who are loudly proclaiming this act to be merely the soldiers defending themselves against malicious intent from colonist, however it is unfathomable to this writer how any person could fail to see this event anything but the needless bloodbath that it was. It is hard to comprehend the vindictive and cruel spirits of the soldiers who attacked that day. Why they would rush upon and several injure many harmless and more often than not, unarmed citizens.…
My Personal Playlist and Transcendental Justification Icarus, Bastille, 2011 I personally love this song simply because of the Greek Mythology reference, as well as the really cool entrance; and I think that transcendentalists might like it as well. My interpretation of this song is that it is talking about how young people search for happiness by doing dangerous and risky things (i.e. Icarus got excited and flew up towards the sun), that may lead to them getting hurt (the sun melting the wax off of Icarus’s wings and him falling to his death. Transcendentalists would like this interpretation, because they believe that although people try to bring happiness into their lives by relying on material things (ex. Drugs and Alcohol), this will never…
A few years ago, one of my good friends sent me some songs to listen to by a band that I had never heard of called Twenty One Pilots. Their sound was completely different from anything I had ever heard before, containing some rap, a ukulele, and a piano all in one album. No one song sounded like the other, but they all contained one common element: some type of deep message hidden in the lyrics. At first, I rejected the band, not liking the way the music sounded, but when I listened again, really paying attention to the lyrics this time, I fell in love immediately. Somehow, these short 3 minute songs by this almost totally unknown duo had utterly changed my entire perspective on life, and on the effects of music in particular.…
Marlena Houck Professor Christopher Schmersahl ENC 1101 9/18/14 Appreciating Art: Rough Draft “In the Arms of an Angel” by Sarah McLachlan is one of the most beautiful and moving songs that has ever been sung. It has proven to be a remarkable piece of art since its release in 1997 because of its enduring use in many different settings. It is delivered in an attention getting manner with simple melodic tones and little background music.…
ABSTRACT As all of us now music nowadays has become an important part of our society and culture and most of the people are conscious about it so many musicians try to leave a message through a song making people have a more deep understanding about their surroundings. The song “Wing$” show us a society where to be cooler than another person has become the first goal. That people think that you are what you buy or what you consume, if you don’t buy expensive things it means that you are nobody, people act like they must have to buy an expensive thing to be more important.…
Music represents the culture and identity because music always part of culture. Through the music people can identify them different from others. Songs, singers, and genres are also important to construct the music. Through the music singers are expressed shared values, experiences, and emotion that define group’s identity and solidarity. For instance, rap music and hip-hop represents its structure of culture and personalities.…
Wiesel consistently refers to fire, flames, and smoke throughout the poem; these terms are very interrelated. Fire, in general, signifies the consumption of an object or thing and once it has been consumed, it no longer exists in its original form. With that repetition, it deepens the meaning of what Wiesel is exerting from his poem; how the flames and fire consumed his faith, the deepest and strongest part of his soul. It creates an environment around the reader of sympathy and makes the meaning of that repetition more significant and effective. This is really effective because something that is sad and painful is more dramatic when it is said in a new environment filled with sorrow and sympathy; enables the communication of the pain that…
The Silent Killer Kid Cudi released the song Pursuit of Happiness on January 25, 2010, which is a part of his album Man on the Moon: The End of the Day. The song made its first television debut on The Late Show with David Letterman on September 12, 2009. Cudi’s album also consists of other popular songs including “Day N Nite”, “Soundtrack 2 My Life”, and “Man on the Moon.” Pursuit of Happiness comes across as a bright, cheerful song that is about living life in happiness, however the much deeper meaning in the lyrics headlines a man that is in a dark place who struggles to obtain contentment. The man masks the bleak truth with components such as alcohol and drugs, but never comes to realize that they will only cover up unhappiness for a small…
In the conflicting light of the election, we are barraged with quotes, policies, and all sorts of analysis. There are some phrases that are so blatantly cliche, they make us want to cringe whenever we hear them. One such quote is presented by Hillary Clinton, who said, “So don't let anyone tell you that our country is weak. We're not. Don't let anyone tell you we don't have what it takes.…
Grammy award winning R&B artist, Adele, conquered the billboards with the number one album ‘21’, selling over million copies. Her most popular song on the album is “Someone like you”, which tells the story of her previous lover. Though she wants nothing but the best for her ex, she prays he remembers the good in the relationship. This soulful song lures in people with situations similar to hers, such as; having to move on from a break up when your heart doesn’t want to and staying strong in knowing it was a reason the relationship ended in the first place, so don’t look back. The poet, Adele, uses various elements of poetry to create a theme of love.…
For centuries and even modern days people have believed that poems were more advanced than song lyrics. However as time moves on songs actually have developed. Songwriters such as Eminem have really taken songs to another level. Poems are thought to be dead but many poems are still are colorful and symbolic like the modern song lyrics. Songs such as “The Monster” by Eminem has evolved lyrics making them equal to poems like “Call of the Night” by Djuna Barnes because both have many devices, meanings and moods they create.…
