Fire Crew Short Story

The strong scent of burning wood filled my nose, stinging my nostrils and causing my eyes to water.I was the Fire Crew's first German Shepherd to be on the force. They welcomed me into the family a few months back and I promised myself to do anything for them.Even risk my life. “Search,Tucker!” I heard my master's command,His voice strong and sharp.I faced the burning two-story, my nose twitching at the scent I picked up of the boy I was supposed to find in the house. The left side was engulfed in flames as well as the roof.Shingles were plummeting down one by one onto the damp grass below.I had to be quick if I was going to find him.I had a gut feeling this building was going to collapse pretty soon. My master put on my fire proof vest and let go of my leash.I immediately raced towards the entrance of the house, the thick clouds of smoke greeting me inside.I could feel the burning hot embers on my rough dry paws as I roamed within the downstairs rooms.Putting my nose into action,I searched for the scent of the little boy. It was complicated to find a whiff of a human when soot and chared wood filled my nose.I thought I could smell him on the east side so I headed in that direction. The moment I thought I found him the scent disappeared

I am a woman. I am a firefighter. Oftentimes it feels like those two statements were never meant to be said together, but I say them proudly. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve had to smile politely or laugh awkwardly when a stranger hurled a cliché in my direction, I’d be quite wealthy. It’s not easy being a firefighter.…

There were many other fire brigades that were clubs or co-ops which only intended to fight each other’s fires that were in the group. Ben Franklin’s concept was to help everyone and their property from burning. During their spare time they met monthly to discuss new tactics on how to fight the fires and train.…

Which made his stomach turn, the sight of buildings destroyed and seeing burnt or dead corpses made him want to hurl. The smell of it was awful as well the smell of burnt rubber, bodies, and gunpowder was still present within the atmosphere. One shop that caught his eye was a toyshop. You know a man to be rather interesting when the first thing someone tells you about them is their incredibly peculiar disappearance. Ambrose Bierce disappeared somewhere into Mexico after December 26, 1913, the date found on what is presumed to be his last letter. Carlos Fuentes, famous contemporary writer of Mexico, swears that you can still hear stories of some old foreigner wandering the Mexican landscape. This, paired with Bierce’s own impressive works and history, inspired writers such as Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortazar, and of course, Fuentes himself. This is what I believe to lie at the core of Chickamauga; that which we pass on to the next generation.…

The short stories, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “The Fireman’s Wife” by Richard Bausch have resonated with me after reading them this semester. I am able to draw similarities from what I’ve read and associate them with the story. Doing so made what I read capture my full attention and transport me into the story. Also, I discovered and tackled flaws in my own character in the process. I found both of these short stories to have been thought provoking and an interesting read as well.…
