“Brush Fire” by Linda Thomas and “ The Santa Ana” by Joan Didion are both pieces of literature that intersect each other and give different views about The Santa Ana winds. These winds were named after the foehn wind of Austria and Switzerland. Which causes many side effects that are considered to be unpleasant. These winds are proven to be dry hot, strong and have a high speed, that brush through the deserts of California to the Southern part of this state. Due to their different views on this subject, their purposes differ from each other.…

From the stories I've read in this smester I love the story titled "To Build a Fire" by Jack London. This is because this story makes me think that the things that are common and easy to do under normal conditions are difficult to do under certain conditions and become vital to the life or death of a person. This story tells of someone who understands the importance of fire in traveling in the open in cold weather, this character has also prepared a match to easily make fire when needed.…

“To Build a Fire” written by Jack London was a wonderfully written piece, which was written at a time of London’s life where all he could rely on was the faith that his writings would deliver him from his financial woes. His efforts did not go unnoticed with this particular publication as it was recognized as his best short story. Understanding his life which would be considered a “rags to riches” portrayal, I am under the belief that “To build a Fire” was the story that catapulted his career as a writer and why he is known as such a prolific writer of his era and in my opinion rivals some of the writers of the 21st generation. Reading London’s about life gave me a better understanding of what led him to become such as great writer. He like…

My favorite short story from this term is "To built a fire" by Jack London. The central theme of the story is that foolish confidence leads to bad results and it is simple and relatable for me. Also the detailed description of building a fire in freezing temperatures such as "He worked slowly and carefully, realizing his danger. Gradually,as the flame grew stronger, he increased the size of the sticks with which he fed it " (London, n.d., p.65) caught my attention. The story makes me look back my life the decisions that I made and I feel fortunate to not be in the posion of the man who built the fire.…

Could you imagine America turning into an authoritarian-totalitarian dictatorship country where you are collected with people from the same social class and put into an area/state (not all areas are peaches and cream either), all while your kid(s), 18 and under, are getting drawn through a lottery and sent out in an arena with 23 other kids to fight till one victor is left standing? I would not want to live there. I recently finished the second book in The Hunger Games series, Catching Fire, by Suzanne Collins. I would recommend this book to anyone in grade four or above because it is graphic in some parts but not over the top. I would especially recommend this book to people who are not confident in the science fiction/dystopian genre but want to try it out. I rated this book a 10/10; it is probably one of my favourite books of all time. I enjoyed this book more than the first one in the series which is unusual as the first books are typically the best.…

Book Review: The Fires of Jubilee Summary of the Fires of Jubilee Oates presents a thorough study that is an accurate portrayal of a mysterious man who lived during a defining moment in American history. The author starts by giving a comprehensive biography of Turner and makes a real effort to show what can lead a man to commit the controversial actions he did. Of interest is that Turner believed that he was ordained by God to free slaves from bondage through a violent uprising. Thus Turner invoked select passages of the Bible to justify the killing of women, men and children (Oates, 14). Specifically, in 1831, the insurgents led by Nat went on the rampage from one farm to another in Virginia slaughtering tens of whites using axes and other weapons and in some cases decapitating children (Oates, 3).…

Righteous Acts Moralism is a controversial subject that is questioned when reading different great works of literature, and those questions mainly deal with the characters and if the acts they do are moral or immoral. The different characters and themes provided in the book, Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins, display how morality and freedom is oppressed in their utopian society. No one can hide from or stand against the President and his awful ways, but as the citizens of the districts work together, there is a promising sight of a noble and equal nation. Although the story may have ended morally sound, it was reached by many principles of right and wrong.…
