Finny: A Short Story

Improved Essays
It was a dark evening in a dirty New York City bar. Finny had no idea how he had gotten here, and went to ask someone where he was. However, nobody seemed to be able to hear him. Eventually, an earnest boy around his age heard him and frantically ran over to him.
“Where am I?” he inquired, “I have no idea how I got here! Nobody can hear me!” he exclaimed.
Finny sighed, “I wish I knew. We can only hear each other, and it seems as if everybody else in this joint is living in another dimension” he pondered. “To be stuck in a bar and unable to even ask for a drink? I must be in hell!” Finny half-joked, and was terrified that his statement held some truth.
The other boy chuckled, and his smile quickly fell into a half-frown “Well, it seems as if

“Okay, Neil. So you’re not dead. Tell me what the last thing you remember is.”
Neil knitted his brows together, “I went to perform in my play. I went home with my dad, and he yelled at me as usual. I meant to go to bed, but I went to his study....”
“And you died?” Finny asked, surprisingly nonchalantly.
Neil shook his head, still doubtful “I think I remember just falling asleep on his desk. I remember a gun… I guess I could have, but I still can’t remember how.”
Finny explained “My memory’s pretty fuzzy, but I was sick as a dog for months. Not that I ever wanted to die, but my stupid decisions did leave me crippled, so maybe it was better to die?”
“What do you mean your ‘stupid decisions’? And I still don’t get how your school broke up your friendship...” Neil

You said part of it yourself, but it’s not just about teachers. My English teacher was the best guy I’ve ever known. It’s our parents too-- my dad, he could never truly listen to anything I had to say. I had to defy him to be true to myself. ‘Acting’s everything to me… He’s never asked me what I want,” (Dead Poets Society). Everybody who knew me knew that.” Neil paused for a moment as his memories flooded back “Now I remember... he may not have physically forced that gun to my head, but he killed me. He killed my spirit, at least.”
Neil and Finny fell utterly silent for several minutes afterwards. Eventually, their attentions turned to the boy of their age that they had noticed earlier. They both seemed to naturally focus on this boy.
“Maybe we’re his guardian angels…” Finny

As this chapter illustrates, Finny enjoys getting himself into tight (and sometimes dangerous) situations, and he relies on his natural charm and often illogical view of the world to extricate himself. While military service overtakes the older students, only the 16-year-old boys remain careless and happy in this peaceful world. For the masters of Devon — and Gene, too — Finny comes to represent the "essence of this careless peace." While Finny likes to defy authority, play games, and jump out of trees — all of these essentially childish activities — Gene, by contrast, wants to become an adult and feels that he should learn how to live in the grown-up world. His basic nature points him in the direction of conventionality and conformity, and…

Blank, dead eyes stared at the blank death like white walls, the pills had done their job. Lucille Chaleau was now like every other person in the glorified purgatory, Marie de Médicis Asylum. Her mind wobbled unsteady in her convulsing body, her vision became blurred, everything went black. It was simply another 6:30 p.m. With the sun’s rise screams pierced the air, jolting Lucille from her medicated coma like slumber.…

Gene is now able to understand the fallacies in Finny’s flawless, but unrealistic, world; therefore he is free to address his true foe. He understands that he was symbolizing his desire to be like his best friend by detesting Finny for possessing all the qualities Gene himself craved. Finny’s death causes Gene’s misperception to die as well: "I did not cry then or ever about Finny... I could not escape a feeling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case” (Knowles 186). Gene now realizes that he cannot become his best friend because the perceived qualities of Finny that he coveted were not realistic and that no one truly existed with the possession of all of those ideal traits.…

Every day for the last 6 months has been the same. Each beginning by walking across the road to the same old cafe. I now know all the cracks on the pavement and could easily make it through my day with my eyes shut. I walk straight past the counter without having to order, then sit in my usual seat by the window alone, take out my laptop and wait for my coffee. The only thing I have ever known to change is whether I am gazing at the sun, the rain or even occasionally snow through the cafe’s dusty window.…
