Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA)

Improved Essays
When a person has three thyroid nodules present, they are usually recommended to have a Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) with a guided ultrasound. Once the sample is collected and sent for testing a cytotechnologist and then a pathologist will interrupt the results. When I was doing my clinical rotations for my certificate in cytology I was told that thyroid FNAs were considered our “bread and butter”. Now, I didn’t realize what that meant at that time in my career, I just thought okay, this hospital gets a lot of thyroid FNAs but what about other hospitals? Thus, nearly ten years into cytology I realize that thyroid FNAs are so common no matter where you are located that they will keep me in my job providing me with my income to support my family.

THE FAMILY NURSE PRACTITIONER The role of the Family nurse practitioner (FNP) began in the 1960’s as a result of a shortage of primary care providers. (Kennedy, 2014) That however, does not conclude that family nurse practitioners are only a secondary option to fill the void of primary care physicians in underserved areas. Instead, the FNP role has evolved in response to the recognition that nurses with advanced education and training are fully capable of providing primary care and significantly enhancing access to high-quality and cost-effective health care.…

Literature Review In the article “Safe Needles Save Lives” it discusses how even though there is a law for the use of safe needles, sharps are still injuring too many nurses. “In eight years of data collecting, there have been 25,000 reported injuries occurring during injection procedures. (Trossman, 2010).” The article believes that sharps injuries can be prevented if health care professionals all work together to emphasize the importance of sharps injury prevention so there is more awareness.…

    3. In the Syringe and Needle Exchange as HIV/AIDS prevention for Injection Drug Users article, the reason for the research was that there were critics claiming that the needle exchange program will encourage the use of IV drugs, even though there were reports in decline of HIV infection among IV users by one third. The method used for data collection is by a semiannual survey of IV drug users (IDUs) recruited in the natural settings in three communities around San Francisco, and the Prevention Point syringe exchange program records. Liquid biopsy as a Game Changer Pancreatic cancer is ready for investigation with a liquid biopsy, as indicated by analysts at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center52. A liquid biopsy is the simple, cheaper and faster, minimally invasive sampling and analysis of liquid biomarkers that can be isolated from body fluids, primarily blood14, 53. Moreover, liquid biopsies have turned out to be all the more clinically valuable in recent years due to the ability to pair tests on circulating tumor cells (CTCs), circulating tumor nucleic acids (ctNAs) and tumor derived exosomes with genomic tests53-56. (Figure 1A) Interestingly, liquid biopsy can characterize tumor biomarkers, similar to tissue biopsy which allows early detection of disease,…

The experience of the patient in the article does seem to be a common occurrence and one that is apparently trending more towards the norm in medical practices. Medicine in this country is a business and when physicians or organizations have a financial interest or referral agreements, this incentivizes ordering images; whether necessary or not. It underlines a reason why patients need to speak up, ask questions, and take a greater role in their healthcare. I have never had a CT scan, but a somewhat related experience is when my dentist had X-rays taken on a tooth, referred me to an Orthodontist, and then the tooth was X-rayed again in that office a couple of days later. In retrospect, I can question why the first images taken were not sufficient…
