Finding Yourself
The musical’s central theme was searching for identity through the transition between childhood and adolescence. The teenagers are all learning about their sexuality through conversations, letters, and dreams.
The scene at Moritz’s funeral with his father is one I found especially moving. Gabe Calleja, who played many characters, did an awesome job of being very distraught which was believable to me. One production element I spotted that reinforced the central theme was the manipulation of lights. The different lighting throughout the play did a great job of telling a story. There tended to be darker lights used with dark dialogue and lighter lights used where the mood was more positive. For example, when Rodney performed the

The males portrayed themselves as horny young students, excited about even the smallest findings of their sexuality. In contrast, female characters were curious but at the same time shy. In particular Wendla, portrayed by Alex Golden did a good job in embodying her character's predicament. She was a young girl who was naturally curious and did not get information from her mother that sufficed. In the beginning of the play Wendla asks her mom about the details of love and how babies are made. Her mother, portrayed by Estie Pyper, kept beating around the bush and clearly wanted to avoid the subject. Wendla explores elsewhere to discover what love is and decides how she identifies with it. Although I thought all the actors demonstrated a great amount of performance skill, Gabe Calleja demonstrated a lot of discipline. He played multiple characters in the musical that required very different cues and pre-beat objectives. Personally, it was like each character was played by a new person and I enjoyed seeing the transitions. One role I could see myself playing is Moritz. I identified with his overall panicky and embarrassed vibe and feel I could portray the character well. A role I could not see myself playing is Hanschen. I do not believe I could play his character to the degree that is required, particularly the mastarbation scene and his

Frank Paiva, the author of “A Prince Charming for the Prom (Not Ever after, Though)” describes his experience as the gay prom date for his female friends. Paiva successfully explains the adversity that LGBT youth in a heteronormative society face. Through the use of various rhetorical strategies such as the Aristotelian Appeals and informal diction, he highlights the fact that society is not ready to accept LGBT people and those that differ from society’s expectations. Paiva establishes his credibility by explaining his past circumstances, but he loses some validity when he expresses prejudice towards other LGBT youth. Paiva first establishes ethos by stating that “[he] knew [he] was gay in sixth grade and came out in eighth (1)”.…
