The recent sequel to “Finding Nemo”, “Finding Dory”, which was released in 2016, takes the Disney Pixar classic from a new perspective as Dory searches for her parents. Dory is a blue tang fish with a memory that lasts for a brief ten seconds at a time and remembers nothing outside of the current ten seconds. Except in this movie, Dory remembers something, she has a memory of her parents, which shocks Nemo, Marlin, and all of Dory’s friends, ultimately inspiring Dory to go on a quest in search of her parents. Her friends seem skeptical at first, but Dory begins to remember details that lead her to Jewel of Morrow Bay and eventually the Marine Life Institute that rehabilitates animals to release them back into the wild. At this point Dory believes her parents may be dead, a nadir in her search for a sense of family, which establishes an internal conflict over what she should do next, how she handles this information, and what family is without her parents. The truck in which she initially ends her search for her parents holds many of the facility’s creatures, which are to be shipped to an aquarium elsewhere, and is where she loses her friends, falling back into the ocean down a drain. As she escapes the truck headed to Cleveland, Nemo, Marlin, and Hank the septapus (he lost a tentacle), do not make it out of the truck. Meanwhile aimlessly swimming in thought, Dory actually stumbles across her parents who have unceasingly sought after her by laying shells out to guide her to their new home. Dory’s exuberance and short attention span lead her to her next challenge of now reuniting with her friends who helped her along this
