Financial Issues In Social Work

The expectations for many families with children are different than they were under previous efforts to help families with children, creating a new social way for families in need of government assistance or job placement the recession of our country and the financial crises have long affected our communities that are impoverished and also vulnerable. This is also affecting those families who in the past have been at one time financially stable. According to Brieknmaier & Culey, 2009; McGuire, Bikson, & Blue-Howells, 2005; Sherraden, 2010; Social workers have reported an increasing number of individuals and families struggling with financial problems. Programs that are focused on financial, literacy and home buying education and credit counseling have little impact on many of the surrounding communities. There is need to give financial knowledge and skills to clients in order to help them understand their financial concerns. Many social workers are not trained in this area because they are not educated about this. Many social workers do not understand the reasoning on why there is so much poverty or the economic injustices that are done to not only the impoverished but those who have degrees and cannot find work even after finishing their degrees. Education and Policy and Accrediation Standards (EPAS) require social work educators to prepare new professionals to “Work towards social and economic justice” (FREY ET AL.). Studies showed that many welfare receipents faced considerable barriers to attending literacy and training programs due lack of transportation, child care and work schedules among many other factors ( Wheeler & Dalton, 1998) as cited in FRET ET
