Most people achieve financial independence in their twenties, some when they graduate high school. However, there are some minors that have achieved financial independence in their teenage years through being ahead in school, working hard, and having a good job. According to Findlaw.com, “So before you ask,’How do you get emancipated?’ you should ask whether you should get emancipated. Consider the following: You will have to find and pay for a place to live (which may need to be furnished).You will need to pay for your own health care. You will have to buy and cook your own food. You may now be sued and held financially liable.” There are a lot of costs to living on your own that we sometimes forget about. If you have abusive or neglective parents, you may want to consider being emancipated as a teen. If you have a good, stable relationship with your parents then you may not want to consider emancipation. Emancipation can limit the time you get to spend with your parents, and can even ruin relationships with them, seeing as they may take it personally. “Unlike physical neglect or abuse, where there are signs such as bruises or children coming to school underfed, emotional neglect is difficult to identify as there are frequently no observable signs. More importantly, emotional neglect is generally unrecognized by the child until symptoms begin to appear in adulthood,” (goodtherapy.org). Situations such as this can be very dangerous and difficult for a person to overcome, even as an adult. This would be a great circumstance to consider getting out of the situation by getting emancipated. Neglective and abusive parenting can lead to a lot of emotional and psychological damage. Getting out of that situation through emancipation could be very beneficial to you. On the other hand, if your relationship with your parents is good, emancipation could damage or destroy it. Considering your parents relationship to you and their parenting style can help you in making your decision on whether or not to become emancipated.
