Women around the world have used abortion to control their reproduction at every point in history and in every known society for an ample amount of reasons. The decision to have an abortion is typically motivated by multiple, diverse and interrelated reasons but the 3 most common causes would be the fact that the mother is too young and not prepared for the transition into motherhood, the second reason being financial complications and the final reason is the fact that a young child could interfere with studies in school and also work. The topic of abortion is a touchy subject because many people agree with it and many people don’t, but regardless of the pros and cons of the situation, it is important to understand what factors help women make this vital decision One the most prevailing reasons for abortions today is age. So many young women are becoming sexually active and are not taking the consequences into consideration. According to a study conducted by a research team at the Guttmacher Institute in New York, younger women often reported that they made the decision to get an abortion because they were too young and were not prepared for the transition to motherhood (Finer). Becoming a mother is more than just changing diapers and making bottles, being a parent is a major life-changing event in which consistent daily Stressors can decrease one’s self-efficacy, confidence, and ability to perform the tasks associated with parenting (Coleman & Karraker, 1998). Being a young mother is not an effortless task, young women need all the support from family and friends and this is another factor that plays into a young girl’s decision to terminate her pregnancy. Not having enough support can cause the expectant mother to worry and feel as though she is all alone during her gestation. The most important people the mother would need during this time are her parents, the father of the child and confidants, but without this, there is a chance that she could lose all hope. Most parents are totally against their baby girl bringing a child into the world at a young age so they tend to let their anger and emotions make the decisions on how they react to the news about the baby and the same usually goes for the young father, just like the mother, he is not prepared at all for fatherhood and his lack of support could lead to the mother terminating the pregnancy so she will not lose him. In another study conducted by Guttmacher Institute, 48% of women stated that they decided to terminate their pregnancy because they did not want to be single mothers or that they were having relationship issues.
