As a first generation student, trying to figure out everything there is to know about college was initially an overwhelming challenge. However, I’ve had great help from older friends and teachers. I’ve also attended many college seminars to learn more about the admissions and financial aid process. Most importantly, I now have a college advisor from College Point who calls, texts, and emails me every once in a while to make sure I’m on the right track and answer any questions I may have. If I ever need any help, I have my advisor Elliot’s number in my phone and I can easily text him. Elliot will be helping me through the process of applying for college in this upcoming year as well! In addition, I am a College Prep Scholar with Quest Bridge, which means that I have the luxury of getting personalized essay advising for when I am writing my college essays. …show more content…
In June, I’ll be taking the ACT for the third and last time. I have only taken the SAT once, in early March, but I do not have those results yet. I plan on taking two or three SAT Subject tests and the SAT itself again this summer. Both tests will be administered in June, and my weeks of summer break leading up to the test dates will be spent at Barnes and Nobles studying. I have The Real ACT Prep Guide, which I have and will be using to study for the ACT. As for the SAT, I have been using Khan Academy, and I will start to use specific SAT Subject test prep books during the

Although the new SAT and ACT are both very similar in terms of material and neither is preferred over the other, the SAT is a more appropriate for me as it is a better alternative to my test taking skills and more relevant to my career choice. According to the article, “Which One Should You Take?,” the ACT has a science section of the test while the New SAT doesn’t include “a science section. The “science” section of the ACT is easy to master, and has nothing to do with science. But if you hate it, then the New SAT is your savior” (Doc 1).…

I am the first generation in my family to attend a University and never had an explanation about the application process. An educational opportunity I took advantage of was the Early Academic Outreach Program. This preparation program gave a presentation at my AP English class during my junior year and motivated me to assist their two day weekend bootcamp. The program was so valuable that it was worth it waking up early and for my parents driving me to UCLA for two days. It helped me to overcome my anxiety and my hesitation about the application process to Universities.…

I sought out the advice of an adviser who I have been working with for the past three years.…

When they want something they are very determined to go after it and succeed. As an academic advisor, I am passionate about helping students with their educational and life goals. I believe it is important to assist students in choosing classes that will help them reach their future career goals while currently balancing student life, work, and family. As an academic advisor, I believe it is important to not limit myself to advise students all students whether part-time, full-time, transfer, or traditional on college curriculum but also university policies and regulations to help them through their advancement. Four months ago as the summer was coming to an end, and the upcoming school year was lurking in the air like an unwanted smell, I had a fleeting, very unwelcome feeling of freshman year. No longer would I be a high school student living in my parent’s house in the small town of Parker, Colorado. I instead, would be traveling 1,145 miles to Oxford, Mississippi, and attending school with 23,000 other students. I clung to my mom at orientation like a child hiding behind their mother’s skirt because I was terrified of the unknown. I did not know what to expect of college, the south or this new, and exciting experience.…
