Finals Week Research Paper

The only more stressful time than a five test Friday is finals week. During finals week, students spend several hours studying many different subjects. After all that hard work all they get is a short four day weekend to recover from four days of challenging exams. It would be much more beneficial for students to have a long break after the exams to allow students recover. Teachers would also be given more time to grade these exams and other projects the students completed. On return from break, students would start fresh and recovered. The finals should be moved before winter break because it gives students time to recover, students return into a new semester, and teachers get more time to grade.

Christmas break almost acts like a shorter summer. Over summer break, students set new goals to try to complete when the school year starts. This is similar to winter break because students often set goals to do better in school as a new year's resolution. However, coming into a new year with the same grades from the semester before can destroy this inspiration to do better. Returning with all grades at a one hundred percent gives students hope that they can reach their goals in the new semester. Also, when students enter break they will be relieved they are already done with finals, and there will overall be less stress. When exams are after break, students are more stressed because they know that finals are coming when they return to school. This detracts from the time that could be spent with family. According to a study in South Korea, “The findings highlight the potential adverse consequences of disappointment in high-stakes testing and suggest that the risk of suicide may be significant among high achievers too” (Wang 345). Their study shows that stressful tests can increase the risk of suicide in teenagers. By moving finals after break, it would lower any chances for students reaching extremely high levels of stress because there would be plenty of time to recover from the long break. Would year-round school or would normal school be more beneficial for students? Some people believe that year-round school is better and are thinking about changing their school schedule to year-round. The education system should change schools to a full year schedule because students get the same amount of time off, students wouldn’t forget information as easily, and students would have a mind of clarity. The Benefits Year-Round Schooling Since the beginning of time, teaching and learning has been a detrimental part of what makes us able to innovate and experience the world around us. A form of schooling introduced in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s was a year round school system (Pedersen, "The History of School and Summer Vacation"). This system allowed for more days within the learning period and allotted for students to get more out of their education. Research from all the way back to a hundred years ago has shown that students tend to lose information and their footing during a traditional summer vacation (Fairchild, "Why and how communities should focus on summer learning."). The current system most public schools within the…

If the next generation is our future, would that consider a senior in high school to be more valuable than a senior in college in society? If the new generation will bring more excellence, knowledge, and a different outlook to the way things are to insure a better tomorrow, the youngest would hold the most worth. Senior Year My greatest memory so far in my eighteen years of being on this earth is without a doubt my senior year of high school. It was absolutely unforgettable. My senior year as a whole (which was just last year) was the most fun I’ve ever had in my life and the happiest I have ever been. When I was a chubby little freshman with glasses I thought to myself that high school would be one of the longest time periods of my life and that four years would feel like forty years. But man was I wrong, high school went by in the blink of an eye.…
