In my time at NYU and abroad in South Africa, I have been given the opportunity to work both alongside and in the communities of amazing people. The majority of these peeps being women simply because of the gender and women’s politics that I have focused my major and work on. I have taken the issues I care about and attempted to intersect them with different multimedia platforms. For example, I made a short film that touches on both the prevailing topic of sexual assault on college campuses and street harassment in New York City. However, I have yet to apply my writing, photographs and doodles to the mix. With that, I want to utilize the skills that I am gaining in this course to explore yet another art form that can be used to grapple with identity politics and and my own experience as a young person in the postmodern world. The goal is to use myself as an example of just how potent cultural influencers are in my life and how I perceive life. The struggle I have is with trying to build these feelings and sentiments into visuals rather than written words with visuals to accompany them. Some of my ideas for combating this issue is to use intricate stick figures to supplement stories and also play more with lenses ie. a camera lens, sunglass lens (as I did last week), eyeballs as lenses etc. to show the world as it molds to my personal experience. For this week’s reflection, I choose to write about Mapping Community Assets Workbook by Diane Dorfman. The key concept for the reading was about how you can see what people around you can offer to help you achieve or gain something. The main point of the reading was to help the reader see what they have to offer and what other people the reader knows can offer them. The concept I had the most trouble with is coming up with assets of mine that weren’t materialized but actual individuals.…

An important part of teaching someone about your culture and worldview is showing them where you come from and how that has affected you. The three items I would choose to represent these aspects of me would be a lei, a photo of my mother’s house in Laos, and a photograph of Pale Blue Dot. These three items provide a mixture of my personal history as well as an accurate depiction of who I am as a person. The lei represents my upbringing in Hawaii as well as my admiration of the Hawaiian culture.…

The Influence of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Ruan Huisman and Banksy on My Artwork and Concept My concept and artwork has been inspired by hyper-realism and symbolism movements. That is why I have chosen these two artists for this essay. The first artist is Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the artwork is La Pia de' Tolomei (1868-80). The other artist and his work is Untitled I by Ruan Huisman. The final artist, Banksy, is a huge influence on me in both an emotional and physical way through his artworks.…

As we grow up we try to discover who we are however it can be a difficult task since there are many factors that interfere with that process. For instance, everyone has different perspectives about situations due to the environment they live in, their culture, religion and more. Even though it can be hard to find ourselves, we can rely on pictures, music, art, etc to help us learn more about who we are. While doing “My Personal Anthology”, I discovered more about myself and that the question “What is an American?” can have many answers. The pieces of work that I chose were put under themes of love, determination, courage, freedom and agony.…

Artist Statement Politically and socially the world is at stake. The political and social issues are what inspire me to create my artwork. Not only will my artwork show how everyone view our issues as a nation, but show how I view our issues as an individual. I also want to show how the world could be viewed if these issues never exist. This would be shown through graphic design and drawings.…

After reading the material on Zines, one was able to learn and understand the concept of zines and what they mean culturally and socially. In chapter eight, the author discusses how young people will make their own magazines when they can not find an established magazine to submit their writings or art into. The younger generations have a need to see their reflection in the media, so they will seek out zines, lyrical writings and electronic text that they feel speaks to them. When a young person cannot find a text that suits themselves, they will make their own literary zine and make their presence be known. Zines, which are a type of magazine, are small self published booklets that have material contributed from amature artist and writers.…

There's so much material buried deep in our subconscious and unconscious minds and sometimes those aspects of ourselves that we conceal or repress have a greater sway over our identities than we think they do. The unconscious mind is also the source of our dreams, hence the title of my piece, Je Rêve (I Dream).…
