In order to gain experience and have experiences with individuals with disabilities, I decided to go bowling with them. Every Saturday morning, Brookgate Lanes hosts a bowling league that is made up of individuals with disabilities. They were kind enough to let me spend the morning with them and bowl, and I had a great time filled with amazing experiences.
1) Your interactions with the individuals with disabilities. Describe your feelings at the beginning of the experience compared to the end as you began your reflection. Were you nervous, excited, anxious etc.? Did those feelings change as the experience evolved? What new feelings immerged? If not, what transpired that caused your feelings to not change? At the start of the experience, I was apprehensive. I do not have many prior experiences with individuals with disabilities. Although, I did feel more comfortable having the knowledge I have gained from this class and others in order to help me understand these individuals better, making me more comfortable. I also think the individuals who bowl every week had a fun time critiquing me and helping me improve myself. I really enjoyed doing this type of activity as opposed to others that were options because it really gave a chance for communication. With an event such as a walkathon, although it is a great cause, there may not be as much communication available with the individuals involved. I think this could also be due to the fact that bowling is an activity that a group of friends may choose to go out and do. That is a good thing because it made my relationship with the individual with disabilities a friendship and seemed less of something I had to do for
