Final Portfolio Cover Letter I have always enjoyed writing so I feel like classes such as these help me more than others. Before I finish college I hope to take some sort of creative writing class as I feel as I haven’t given that opportunity much in recent years amidst constant essays on topic that I do not care about. As a writer I believe my biggest strength is that when I start writing I can keep writing almost until I have run out of things to write about or am interrupted for some reason. I also feel as though I’m very good at writing about things I am passionate about and if I care about a topic you will be able to clearly tell when reading what I wrote. I am also good at being organized so when I, for example, lay out an argument in an introduction, I will stick to it until the end. As for weaknesses, the main ones are that I almost never read over a paper after writing it and, unless I have to, I never write multiple drafts. This is mostly due to time constraints and my final product often suffers for it. I have gotten better on this front, though, so it definitely isn’t as big a problem as it used to be. Another problem I have is that I struggle trying to come up with how to begin a paper, with the exception of a paper in high school about why the North won the Civil War where I began with “Contrary to what many southerners might believe, the South shall NOT rise again.” I can never top that and I know it. My process for completing a project varies for every

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

Coming into English 101, I really did not know what to expect. This was my first college writing class so I had no idea what it was going to be like. In high school I would have considered myself to be a decent writer, not the best or not the worst. I would never impress anyone with my writing skills but I could still come across as educated on my topic.…

Frankly, I do not consider myself as a scholar because I am not at all studious compared to other students, but I will admit that I have become well informed of my weaknesses because of this year’s courses. Fundamental high schools motivate students to attend challenging classes and this is why Godinez was suitable for me; it is only through arduous teaching and workload that I can understand my abilities and strengths. AP classes, for instance, serve to bolster my desire to learn. The most difficult course for me was undoubtedly AP English Language. Writing has never been --and still is not--…

Surviving English Comp 1 Writing Class Writing is one thing I hate the most. It was hard to write an essay for the first time because I did not have the knowledge or concept of this writing style. Before this class, I thought I knew what writing was all about by expressing my thoughts, ideas and feeling. I know now that I had the wrong concept on how to write. I can express my thoughts, ideas and feeling, but if I put them in the wrong contents it does not lead the reader to the point of the essay.…

While taking a class in college, many people just go through the motions and show up to class to get the job done. But after taking my first English Composition class this fall I realized how much important material and knowledge I have gained. When I write I like to clarify myself as an ok writer. My weakness in writing is that I lose sense of what I am writhing and I make a story that is off task with some spelling errors, and the story I am supposed to write is a whole new story. Throughout English Composition 1, I have learned several crucial writing skills. Writing skills that will benefit me in other classes, outside of school, and during my future college years. Not only will these benefit my overall writing and making it flow better, it will all in all make more sense to the readers. Even though I learned many skills and objectives during this semester, four skills really stood out to me. Cohesion, comma usage, the use of satire, and how to write a definitional essay.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

Critical reflection Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself as a writer is that it is okay to be aware of your weaknesses and using the necessary tools to support and strengthen them. As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have learnt to understand the importance of sentence structure, drafting, and proof reading and not over using commas creating sentences that are too long.…

At the beginning of the semester, I viewed myself as a creative writer. After attending this class I realized that there is a lot more that goes into writing an essay, or a research paper, than just creativity alone. I have learned that it is very important to be aware of my strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Taking this class has helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills, and it has given me the opportunity to strengthen the areas in which I was weak. An example of this is that I have become aware of my grammar and spelling errors as the semester progressed.…

I think John Jay should make us take this course because English class is one of the most important thing in a student's academic career. We have to make sure everyone in college are able to write a paper before they graduate. Most classes in college, don't really require the students to know how to write a essay. So I feel that taking an English course is very important. In order to pass this class, I must secure and obtain the skills I require to do so.…

Writing has always been a struggle for me for as long as I can remember. I find it difficult to put my thoughts on a paper, especially if I have to do it in another language. Some people think that as long as they can speak a language or communicate with other people, it is enough. However, these people are totally wrong. People do not only need to speak a language fluently, but they also have to be able to write it.…
