Once students were done we hung the posters up around the room and did a gallery walk. After our gallery walk we came back together as a whole group and discussed the big idea of systems interact. How did we see that idea in the video and readings? How were they able to apply it to their posters? And where did they see it in the other groups posters? Did they think that themselves as systems would be able to interact and successfully trade? Or would their interaction end up without success? This was their final formative assessment for the lesson. I was able to gauge student learning and understanding by students answers and connections to the big idea and material (Snowman & McCown, 2013). Student were able to connect the content to the big …show more content…
First, they had to call on back ground knowledge regarding the big idea. By doing this they were connecting their previous knowledge to a new concept. Next, they were asked to read and watch videos and connect them to the big idea. Here they were deepening their knowledge through analyzing the resources to look for systems and how they can and do interact with each other. Students also had to work with group members to come up with a workable system that could interact with other systems. This took a great deal negotiating between students in the groups in order to evaluate and decide what they would sell, how they would sell it, what they wanted to name their poster, and how they would advertise in general. Students had to show mutual respect for each other throughout the negotiation process and had a chance to express their perspectives on the different items. The posters themselves were designed to be cognitive demanding across content areas. The poster were synthesized using English language arts through citations, math standards through finding the prices of their items, science by determining what their item was made from or whether it was a natural resource, art through drawing and design, and finally social studies through the Egyptian focus. They had to draw conclusions of what would make their system successful based on the information they analyzed from the resources and then apply it. Furthermore, when the students were done with the posters we came back together as a whole group and they had to articulate how they saw systems interact within the resources and the other

Today’s world needs professionals that are able to relate their field with others so as to develop strong projects. Phenomenon such as Globalization has made many of the things learnt in high school or college will not be useful in the future. As a simple reference, twenty-five years ago the use of computers was not common, currently the computer has been converted in the most necessary tool for the daily labor. It is likely that in next years, we must learn how to manage concepts or tools that today are not usual. Consequently, if we focus on just learning the theory, we will not be able to adapt that knowledge into different contexts over…

Social studies class will display their class timeline and final essays, ELA classes will share their bound narratives, and science will have oral presentations of the animals they researched. Parents and the community should be invited so that they can see the work that the students put into their projects. Also, knowing that work is going to be shared and displayed can be a motivating factor for some students (Humphrey et…

The field experience video that was my favorite was the Tim Bedley critical thinking videos. I really like this videos because the teacher keeps the students engaged and applies a problem based learning technique to help solve a problem that many the students have been struggling with. The problem that was at hand was the class was not reaching consensus on their work. To solve this problem, the teacher gets the students in a group and tells each group needs a table leader, time keeper, and somebody to record the information by writing the ideas down. The teacher then listens to the student’s responses and clarifies any misunderstandings.…

Rhetoric is language “designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect on its audience”. It is important to use rhetoric in order to effectively make an argument. In “Collaborative Learning for the Digital Age”, Cathy Davidson uses Pathos, Logos and Ethos to convince the reader that collaborative learning is a new way that can provide society with a great opportunity to advance in problem solving and learning. The author has established her credibility as a Professor for interdisciplinary studies at Duke University, uses logistics from studies done to prove the efficiency of collaborative learning and shares stories to relate to the audiences emotion. Through the rhetorical appeals of logos, ethos, and pathos, the author makes her argument…

Issues of Representation, Identity and Difference 21/10/15 In class today, we grouped ourselves and answered questions in relation to issues of representation of a particular image/advertisement. This advertisement shows a black man, cleanly shaven and well dressed and holding an empty supposed ‘head’, with the catch phrase “Re-civilize Yourself”. Essentially, the advertisement was implying that the empty hair, having long scruffy hair and a beard in comparison to the shaven model was ‘uncivilized’, and using the advertised products would help the targeted audience (men) ‘civilize’ them.…

hings done well During the days leading up to the presentation there was some thought that went into how to create and deal with some topics. This can be seen how to create a good visual presentation for the people learning. This can be seen when there were some pictures/images of the different kind of snowboards to help people picture what these snowboards can look like. The visual representation of these characteristics allowed the group to understand how these snowboards look like and giving a description as to why they are shaped the way that they are.…

Final Exam: Self Evaluation Essay I personally can say that I have seen an improvement in my writing since my initial evaluation in the middle of the semester. During my first evaluation I was very confused with many of the general concepts the class held and it reflected in my writing. Answering the questions presented in the midterm evaluation and reviewing my first writing assignment Meta commentary pushed me to try to grasp a better understanding of assignments and ask for more helpful feedback that would benefit me in developing writing especially in the concept of methods and organization. Slowly and surely as the rest of the semester progressed forward I saw an improvement in my writing style and content.…

The Duke University had brought iPod as an academic device and educational experiment to all the first-year class students. The iPod inverted the traditional role of technology, which has many new functions. Students not only can listen to music, but also use the iPod as an academic device to collaborate with others. This concept can be seen in Project Classroom Makeover, by Cathy Davidson.…
