As it’s name may suggest, it’s the typically negative side of the unconscious which follows us in the back of our head. We are to a degree suppress the shadow in order to avoid societal backlash. Although to completely suppress the shadow would be to suppress human creativity, emotion, and basically all of our primal instincts. There needs to be a balance between the wildness of the shadow and what would be deemed normal by society. It can be positive though but still hidden within because it doesn’t match with the outward vision of yourself you may want to present to the world. Without the shadow, a person would become completely controlled by the unconscious which would create an unbalance of the psyche. Typically, the shadow is the opposite of your true self.
