Final Case Study: Reflection
Introduction
J is a three-year-old male student. He is in preschool and attends the school where I currently work. His mother is a colleague of mine, too. J is an only child and likes to read books with mommy, play outside and climb objects, and work on puzzles. His teachers describe him as a sweet boy that can be defiance at times. He sometimes screams for no apparent reason and his communication skills are typically developmentally appropriate. Additionally, his teachers report that when a directive is given to him – he often repeats it multiple times as if he is trying to remember or convince himself, as reported by his teacher. ”J’s mother reports that J is fully potty-trained; however, his teachers have not

Going into this case study, I was fully aware that my role was to be the consultant and not the one who implements the interventions. After discussing the consultation model in further detail with my BCBA, Sarah it became clear to me that this is something that I have to be okay with (not implementing the interventions). I have a difficult time when I take on a role and I am not successful all the time. I learned this after my first year or two of teaching – that at times I would not ‘reach every child’, every child is not going to master every skill that I teach them, and that each child is going to respond differently to my instruction and behavior management. I remember at the beginning of my freshman year of St. Joe’s in my Schools in Society class, I was placed at an elementary school in North Philadelphia. I called my dad upon arriving back to campus and I remember crying because I wanted to make a difference, a difference in each of children’s lives. He told me, “You have to teach with all of your heart, but realize that I will not be able to reach every single child.” I am remembering this and applying it to this experience, too. I need to be okay with interventions not working and be okay that I may not get to oversee the entire process. I had a difficult time with not seeing through the rest of this study. Yes, J is only downstairs in the preschool room, but he is not my student and I cannot force his teachers to continue to implement the interventions. I am hoping they continue to use them and continue to see success. I hope that J masters the target behavior, successfully eliminating in the

The reason being is they are just taking everything one day at a time and feel that they will deal with that challenge when it becomes more relevant. They do know however, that they will not be sending Emily to the same high school as her oldest sister Madison went to. When we were talking about transitions for Emily I was thinking about the information I was learning in my class specifically for transitioning. In that class we learned that the earlier you start, the smoother the transition from post-secondary to adult life will go. Our text suggests that “Despite requirements for transition planning, many parents continue to report that there is a lack of planning, information, and collaboration in planning for their child’s future” (Turnbull, 2015, p. 101).…

I came into the class clueless about having to pay for the fingerprints in order to observe children. I thought if anything I just needed a college letter stating what I need to for this course. I may have hated the fact I had to personally pay for my fingerprints, but in the long run it going to be beneficial since I already have an interest to work with children in schools. As I read my AHAs I realize I worry a lot about time management and getting my work done. I always felt as if I wait to last minute, I would never get my assignments done.…

Compass incorporated training throughout the year. The first visit was a basic, just to get teachers introduced and excited about the program. Teachers were not able to bring it back into the classroom, until the next training. At first, I thought this seemed silly, but then I realized by the time we get back into the classroom we have forgot almost everything that was discussed and the program is then used wrong. We were given a password that allowed teachers to play with a fake class.…

Many parents have signed petitions to push against year round schooling. One parent said,”I need the 2 1/2 months where I can pull my children out of the school system, pull them away from any peer groups ...and teach them any lessons I want to them to learn, not what the Board of Education wants them to learn”(Tepe). Parents have said that with school being all year round they won’t be able to see their children and family wouldn't be able to see them as much because their…

I feel that most of the stuff that we learn in school from Pre-school to college we will never use. I have always looked at school as being a big guidebook that can show you the steps on how to handle a certain situation. You may revert back to your lesson but books cannot teach you how to handle life. Most of the things that I have learned is from life experience. When you are applying for a job they want you to have experience in the field that you applying to not just knowledge of the field.…

The first thing I did was email my professors about the school not letting me observe on the days I was supposed to observe. The first day the school had I.D me, and so I just began to wear my old I.D since they “did not have time” to I.D me anymore. I made my own schedule by asking the teachers if anything special was happening the upcoming weeks. Some of the teachers were good with the inclusion children and so I made an effort to try to go to those specific teachers classrooms so I could view those teachers education environment and learn from them. What I learned from those teachers is that I need to be organized and try my best to accommodate to those student’s needs so these students could feel like they’re getting same the education opportunities as the other students.…

Before I took this class, I had a very bad idea of what assessment was, and in my head I kept going back to teachers that, in my opinion, didn’t have a good grasp of what assessment should be used for. In the first weeks this class, I really started to understand why assessment is so important. Assessment is important because the teacher can understand what students know and don’t know. Without assessment, it would be hard for a teacher to help students improve in their classroom because there would be no marker to show improvement. There would be no way to be sure that every student is on the same page in class.…

Some people I knew thought otherwise. In general, I was told that I was wasting my time at college by trying to receive a degree in education. At the end of my junior year of high school, every student was supposed to meet with our school’s guidance counselor to talk about our future plans. During my meeting with the guidance counselor, I was shocked to hear her belittle my plans. She told me “if you don’t get a degree in a S.T.E.M program you will end up with no job and a load of college debt.” Maybe it was just because I was still a naïve high school student, but I always thought that by becoming a teacher I was part of every program since I taught students the basics needed to learn science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.…
