In Collins’ Statistics versus Words, he states how in order to have adequate research, one needs to provide a hypothesis to have validity. He argued that if you don’t come up with a hypothesis before you examine the phenomena, you would be unable to test the evidence fully. He states that if you create your theory after finding evidence, there is not a way to test the validity of the evidence. According to Keynes, those who provide evidence after coming up with a hypothesis will have more weight placed on their theory as opposed to one that is created surrounding the findings. This is due to the fact that the grounds which the theory has been created didn 't come from nowhere. Other than that, there is no …show more content…

Therefore, distrust among sociologists is again emphasized when it is stated how concern is placed on the investigator rather than the findings of a theory. Collins argued that there are areas where statistics are not required to prove the validity of a theory. The example he provided was historical sociology. This area has been carried out using qualitative methods such as face to face interaction which yields results that would have not been gathered by statistics. Historical sociology helps build sociological theory by providing the comparisons that are required to put forth an explanatory theory. Rather than relying on statistics, you can explain the conditions in which a finding occurs and why it occurs in a different condition. Another reason that historical sociology is important is that we don’t end up making assumptions too easily. Despite the world being a seamless web, we are still able to extract pieces of it for our theory. Collins argues however that the more you know about history results in …show more content…
