Trending today in popular culture is the transformation of books, even comic books, into television shows and series. The fascination with zombies, vampires, and other supernatural beings is at the highest it has ever been in our society. The Walking Dead is a television series directed by Frank Darabont, first aired in 2010, which was originally a comic book series by Robert Kirkman. The show displays the willingness of human beings to fight and survive during a zombie’s invasion. According to Diaz Aristides, “Robert Kirkman continues to show that zombies as metaphors are just as relevant today as they were thirty years ago” (Diaz). Season one, episode one of The Walking Dead starts with a shaky introduction that creates unanswered questions in the audience’s mind. This series uses several technical devices to allow the audience to analyze the series’ concepts and message. Life changes quickly and human beings most be resourceful to adapt to these changes.
Camera shots emphasize the unpredictable changes that occur as life move on. The camera shots used in The Walking Dead is a combination of several camera techniques that emphasize the emotions of the scenes. The use of a long camera shot provides an extended view of any scene around any character. The Walking Dead begins with a scene of a road that has a car on it driving on fast speed. The camera never move closer to the car, but the car, instead, comes to camera. Long shot camera in this scene gives the audience an idea of the level of speed that the car is operating on. At this point there is some minor puzzlement, because it’s an average day, average road but then boom! Strange car approaches, mess ahead that Rick could see but audience couldn’t.
