The depth is used to represent the relationship between the members of the group and how they are feeling. As seen in image one the men are all at scattered depths showing their lack of unity. This is also used to display the soldiers feeling of dealing with their problems alone. While the use of depth is used to show the relationship between the men it is also used to show the importance of them. As seen in image two the most important character is Private Ryan who is very close up and personal with the camera. Then as you look into the background you see Captain John Miller, then finally behind him are two other soldiers that are too far away to identify. This use of depth shows the importance of each character, with Private Ryan being the most important, the Captain second, and the rest of the soldiers third. This is important in regards to the essence of the film because it shows how for once in the film Captain Miller is not completely in charge even though he is the commanding officer. Finally, depth can be used to show unity. In image three the soldiers are all lined up an equal distance from the camera showing that they are of equal status and unified as one group. The way these images show this essence is through the progression. The essence of the film is a group of men coming to grips with who they have become as soldiers. The images lighting, depth style, and emotion change as the movie goes on to reflect this essence. In the beginning of the movie the men seem very isolated from each other, with their own different ways of handling their pain. Next, a change is seen in image 2. In this image Captain Miller is placed behind Private Ryan showing that he is no longer the most powerful person. This is different from almost every other scene in the movie where Captain Miller is the main character who is always in charge. Then between image one and image three the soldiers go through a change and become more of a team.
