Whenever a bullet from the enemy sniper hits one of the American soldiers, slow motion is used to emphasize the action not the event. After each hit, the camera goes back to the other soldiers in real time. When slow motion reoccurs, it is for Kubrick to convey to the audience that it is impossible to replicate the moment of death. The characters are trudging along a river stopping at different destinations. Each time they pass a different destination, that specific episode in the film is concluded and the boat becomes larger in scale to the river. Therefore, structure is reflected visually with the river. Whenever a new place is reached or the boat is floating for an extended period of time, Coppola uses voice over narration in the form of Captain Benjamin Willard’s thoughts and voice. This film technique is used so that the audience can get in the mind of the Captain and better connect to his inner thoughts and feelings.
