In this essay I will be examining “Losing Bodies” by Susie Orbach, an essay on the body-shaming of women in modern western culture. She argues that our culture’s obsession with attaining the perfect body has caused women to take drastic measures to achieve modern western beauty standards. When Orbach states that we are “losing bodies”, she is saying that our bodies are no longer seen as our homes, but something in constant need of reshaping to fit into western beauty standards. For decades, the media has perpetuated a western ideal of femininity so narrow that almost no can live up to it.…

“The barmaid...crowns her hair with an elaborate cap” (Bradford 1). These women had ways to style their hair so as to be more like women of a higher status than they. Some women straightened their hair but it was more popular to have curly or wavy hair. In order to get wavy hair, flappers had to use their fingers, combs, and gel to try and get there hair to stay in the shape they wanted. There is a thing as healthy and unhealthy hair though. It hurts my soul to see black woman relaxing or wearing hair extensions to mimic Caucasian women. Then, they say I do it because their hair is too nappy and extensions make them feel good. I just think so straight hair that is not your texture or color makes you feel better. I had one girl tell me natural hair is not for her.…

Chop It All Off Two years ago, I had long, luscious, golden blonde hair that fell down to my waist, and I absolutely hated it. Everyone else seemed to love it, though, so I kept it. I dealt with the static, the lengthy drying time, and the hours of styling that I had dealt with ever since I was little, all because I wanted to be loved and accepted. I wanted to fit into the box of typical girls my age who all had the exact same haircut so that I would be considered “pretty” by the rest of my classmates, but I felt miserable in that box and I didn’t know how to escape.…

A person’s physical and mental appearance changes as his or her adolescent years develop into adult years. Usually in the early years, parents determine how their offspring physically appears and how the child moves forward with life. Parents; however, do not realize that they are taking away their children’s freedom. As time passes by, children who follow their parents’ every order, slowly build up resentment causing them to take matters into their own hands to prove their independence. A child trying to prove his or her independence does not mean that he or she will entirely be independent from his or her parents, but rather distance himself or herself from the little things.…

Perm Hair vs. Natural Hair People think that getting a perm is better for your hair but it really isn’t. Getting a perm messes up your hair badly. I have some reasons as to why natural hair is more convenient. Being natural saves you money because you don't have to keep going back and forth to the beauty shop to get your hair taken care of. A perm on the other hand, you have to always go to the beauty shop and that can become expensive and also hard to maintain.…
