Film Noir Protagonist: Film Analysis

Mildred Pierce Considered to be one of the film noir typed; where the protagonist is male, and the antagonist is female. Wally liked Mildred, but she did not like him, she considered him as friend. However, one day Wally saw Mildred, and she seemed in trouble. They sit and drank in the restaurant or the bar. Then, Mildred asked Wally to go to the beach house, which was not normal. When they arrived to the beach house, there were some features of noir mise-en-scene. First, there was some kind of mysterious detective stories. When she told him lets go to the beach house, he could not believe it because he had been trying to hook her up, and she was refusing him. After, she went to the room and closed the door. He talked her but she did not respond. He knocked the door, but she did not reply him. He wounded consternation and fear, and the he started to search for exit of the house until he found Mildred’s husband dead. Here we see the femme fatale and how Mildred want to put Wally in the trap.
Third, the Chiaroscuro lighting was just light and shadow. When Wally Was looking for what is going on in the house and trying to escape, his shadow was moving with him. It was almost bigger then him. Also, when Mildred was behind the door, she looked dim. The increasing and decreasing of their shadow indicated to climax of scene.
In conclusion, the house beach section demonstrated many characters of the noir film. It showed how Mildred played the femme fatal by trying to make Wally the killer of her husband. Also it did present Wally as detective who wants to know what happing and why Mildred brought him suddenly to the house. Also, in this scene the shadow variations of their bodies played big role. In the end, the scene displayed how Wally was worry and almost has psychological crisis when he found Mildred’s husband
