Film Lord Of The Flies: Is Government Necessary?

Is Government Necessary? What would happen if the Government no longer controlled us, will we be able to live properly, or will we become savages? The film “Lord of the flies” is a great depiction of what could possibly happen without a government. In terms of America, we get protection from the government while, in return, we have to follow its laws. There has been cases, where our rights were taken away, which breaks our social contract. Cases where natural rights like lives, and property taken unconstitutionally. An example of natural rights being taken away, would be during World War 2, where the Japanese had their property inspected, and in certain cases even destroyed. They were placed in internment camps, which violates their liberty. …show more content…
There are people in this country that consider America’s government to be one of the most corrupt in the world. Although I believe that our country’s government is somewhat unconstitutional or “corrupt”, I have a greater fear of what life would be like without a government, and that is why I strongly believe that government is necessary.
Initially, when thinking of a state of nature, many of us tend to think mostly of the freedom that it will bring, instead of the chaos that will most likely ensue. In the film “Lord of the flies”, the boys state of nature was being stranded on an island, where there was no adult to help guide them. They were in a state of nature until they had voted for Ralph to become their leader, which resembled a democratic government. It was a legitimate government as they gave consent for Ralph to rule over them. Ralph depicted a

I believe that in a state of nature, there also could have an upcoming of a leader. Life in nature is as dangerous, if not more dangerous than a government run by a tyrant. As a dictator Jack, only cared about how his followers, and will do everything to remove anyone in his way. He is willing to go to lengths of taking away their inalienable and natural rights. He took away Piggy’s glasses, his right of property. Jack took away Simon and Piggy’s right to life. Even Ralph’s life was nearly taken away, if it was not for the navy. In nature there will be people who have the same mindset as dictators. Their personality is a part of human nature. These people will do everything they can to survive. Jack used the human nature fear to help bring people onto his side. Although it may seem that you will have more freedom in a state of nature, it can be the opposite in certain situations. In a state of nature, people are allowed to do anything they want, but if there were to be a disagreement, people can possibly be killed for what they believe in. Greed, and power is a part of human nature, and war is a big example of these traits. Jack was thirsty for power, and was doing everything he can to turn people away from Ralph. People like Jack, are the usually the winners in a state of nature. The weak opposition are the ones who normally die first. Some

Governments are created by the people to protect their rights. When a government is corrupted and fails to do its job, the people rally against it because it has strayed from its purpose. Many different people have different viewpoints on their government. An excerpt of “Civil Disobedience” shows Henry David Thoreau’s ideal government, and how his current government went against the ideals he believed in. Many examples of naturalism are shown in the fictional short story, “To Build a Fire,” by Jack London, and in Beck Weathers’ non-fictional memoir, “Left for Dead.” In London’s fictional story, we learn of a man who went adventuring in the Yukon, looking for new trade routes. Unfortunately, the man was stopped short when the weather took a turn for the worst and got so freezing he could not even start a fire and eventually froze to death. In Beck’s story he gets caught up in a huge blizzard on Mount Everest and against all odds ends up surviving somehow. London shows naturalism because he knew he had to start a fire in order to live but not knowing a lot about the outdoors failed to successfully make a fire resulting in his death.…

Jack is a distinct example of the instinct of savagery, desire of power, and violent nature that the boys come to follow. Jack is Ralphs antithesis, or opposite in other words. Immediately, Jack retains the sense of decency and behavior that society has taught him. Susan Gulbin quoted Golding in saying "every man is part savage and that savagery is disguised or concealed only by the wall of civilization built by our ancestors" (Gulbin 87). Jack soon obsesses himself with hunting and devotes himself to the task, painting his face and giving himself over to bloodlust.…

Government is the political system by which a group of people are ruled. “If the people cannot trust their government to do the job for which it exists - to protect them and to promote their common welfare - all else is lost.” President Obama says that if one loses trust in their government, they lose everything because the government is what protects us and provides safety towards us citizens. I agree with the president’s views on the purpose of government because government provides everything for us citizens such as protection services, the government plays a key role in the economy, and allows citizens to participate in voting.…

How can our government be benign if we depend from it as much as it depends from us, the citizens? I don’t think it would be a good idea to aggravate the general population that in a way has much more power than the government it self. I feel like if there would be a day were the government would take advantage of its people, then that would be the day when the people of this country would stand against its government. In any matters where the people feel aggravated by its government am pretty sure the people will have a solution, and if that solution is to overwrite the way our government works then we shall do it. But talking about how or government treats us is very pleasant compared to other countries that only utilize they’re citizens to exploited them in hard labor…

Have you ever thought nature and the events happening around you are shaping and determining your life? This was the thought presented in American literature during the Naturalism movement. Naturalism was a literary movement from 1865 to 1915 in which authors wrote how the natural forces of this earth, such as environmental and social conditions, shape people’s lives. One example of literature from this time period is Jack London’s “To Build a Fire”. In this short story, the setting, themes, and writing style all contribute to revealing how the natural forces of this world control a person’s life.…

Jack diminished the power that Ralph had in order to satisfy his craving for control. After his speech, Jack seemed like a better fit for the position of chief which caused the many boys in Ralph’s tribe to side with Jack. Jack’s persuasion allowed him to become the chief of a new tribe that he created on the other side of the island away from Ralph’s now impuissant group.…

The study of literature is very complex and multifaceted. While writing can and does often speak for itself, a great deal of works can be understood more thoroughly by understanding the historical and social influences that may have impacted the author. The most affecting stylistic influences often take the form of literary movements. Studying these various movements can help offer insight into the mind of the author and the story they are telling. One of the more interesting and lesser known literary movements is naturalism (Newlin 24).…
