After the first two weeks of lecture in Cinema Appreciation I have learned a great deal more about what goes into making a film. I was under the impression that there was one magical camera that could change settings to capture the diverse range of images instantaneously. Active viewing was something, I thought I did, but it wasn’t until I took a step back and saw the variety of shots and how each one of them is put together that I realized that there is more then one way to watch a movie. The different ways that a film is shot and how the scene is constructed are ways directors convey meaning to the audience. The view from the helicopter shows the overall size and isolation of this location. Although the viewer can still see the battle taking place off in the distance, this setting makes the spectator feel like there will be a break in the action and Major William Cage and Sergeant Rita Vrataski will be able to catch their breath. The two main characters make a plan to evacuate the trailer park to continue their search for the omega. Director Liman utilizes a deep focus and slow motion shot to show the characters running with their battery operated battle suits to two respective vehicles. The slow motion builds anticipation by decelerating Major William Cage and Sergeant Rita Vrataski from getting to their objective. The focus on both the foreground and background combined with the slow motion shot gives the audience the impression that something might stop the heroes short of their mission. The film language and mise-en-scene in the science fiction movie Edge of Tomorrow is a wide assortment of shots, angles, and compositions. The different camera placements, distances, and movements brought a variety of scenes to life in a realistic way. Director Doug Liman made Tom Cruise look relevant again as an action star with his ability to capture his great acting prowess. Through active viewing and knowledge of film language I was able to watch a film like never
