76) is what you feel about yourself consisting of positive and negative self-evaluations. Although self-esteem is something you evaluate yourself, it doesn’t mean that external influences don’t make you feel less or more about yourself. Sheila, Marcus and Patricia deal with a little more self-esteem issues than most of the others. Sheila is constantly being bullied and talked down to by her husband Mike. He always calls her names referring to her weight. He never makes her feel good about herself or the way she looks. In turn, she would make jokes about herself before he got the chance to. In the movie, she had bought a night gown she was told by Trina, who was sleeping with her husband at the time, that she would look good in it and that Mike would love it. She fed into this once Trina found her size and she put it on and when she got into the bedroom, Mike laughed at her and made fun of her. He said she looked like the cow who jumped over the moon and he also said that Trina lied to her thinking he would like it. He also said, that if she would lose about fifty pound he would ‘probably’ be attractive to her but even then, maybe not. Sheila tried really hard to love her husband and she wanted him to look at her like she was the only girl in the world but he didn’t want that. Marcus was always being belittled by Angela. She constantly cackled at him for not having a job and for working under her at her business. She wouldn’t give him credit for trying to look for a job and providing for his family. He got this courage later in the movie once he put her in her place and told her that if it wasn’t for his money she wouldn’t have a business. Patricia is constantly struggling with the death of her son Noah and her feeling like she is at fault. It doesn’t help that Gavin feels this way also and this comes out. She feels as if she could’ve just secured the baby in the car like she should’ve he would still be here today. All of these

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is a novel based on one character’s, Arnold’s, life of adversity. In addition to both books being attention grabbers, the characters that tell the story have very alike life styles. The novel ATDPTI shares many similarities, and characteristics with the novel, The Glass Castle, some of these include poverty, alcoholism, and different life struggles.…

Vulnerability is a personal human flaw that people try to fix through drastic individual changes. When a person feels vulnerable, their attempts to hide their vulnerability come at the price of psychological alterations, ranging from abnormal personalities to complete lifestyle changes. Leslie Bell 's Hard to Get: Twenty Something Women and the Paradox of Sexual Freedom presents the scenario of altering one 's personal life to avoid feelings of vulnerability in relationships. This, in turn, gives the individual a false self-esteem due to attempts to mask a flaw, as demonstrated through Jean Twenge 's An Army of One: Me. These psychological alterations stem from the fundamental human desire to have positive views of personal life experiences,…

Suzette’s feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness are primarily caused by how she personalized her adverse childhood experiences. The abandonment by her mother as an infant and her emotional abandonment by her father resulted in negative schemas about herself. Another contribution to her core belief of worthlessness were the repeated broken promises by her mother, lack of attention from her father and emotional abuse from her stepmother. Suzette sees herself as needing someone else to rescue her and to make her feel self-assured, as indicated by her comment about her boyfriend that she “doesn’t know who I am without Devon.” Suzette has not indicated any positive relationships in her life and currently has no support system.…

Blanche’s relationship with bright light reveals the most about the complexity that subsists beneath her vanity. Blanche associates bright light with both love and awakening: she describes falling in love as “suddenly turn[ing] a blinding light on something that had always been half in shadow” (Williams 67). However, it also reveals the harshness of reality and she dims the lighting (with the paper lantern) to maintain an illusion of “magic” and present “what ought to be truth” (Williams 84). Blanche associates bright light with a time when her life truly was magical; Blanche was young, beautiful and in love before her life was stripped away and her persona suddenly displaced.…
