This movie shows a timeline of significant events that happened during the 60s that are still having an impact on us today. I choose this movie because I think the 60s were a very important time for women. Birth control was first introduced in pill form for the first time, which just so happened to be shown in one of the first few scenes of the movie when Katie was found with it. In 1963, the Equal Pay Act was signed by John F. Kennedy, and the first women went to outer space. Another large step, was in 1968 when Shirley Chisholm was the first African American women elected into the House of Representatives. These events not only paved the way for women's rights, but they also made it possible for the equal rights amendment to almost be signed a few years later in the 70s. I think Sarah's character was a good example to women about how you shouldn't count on a man to get what you want but that the power is within yourself to get where you want to be. Women were protesting outside of the venue; they were burning feminine products that seemed to objectify them. Bras, playboy magazines, fake eyelashes all were burned to symbolize how we shouldn't let ourselves be objectified. During the actual event, a banner that read "Women's Liberation" was seen by the crown and the contestants. I understand why the feminists protesting the event thought that what they were doing was helpful, but in some ways I think it was wrong. It was wrong because by protesting the pageant they were making fun of those women who enjoy doing the pageant. I think the key Point of feminism is that we shouldn't put any women down for the choices she makes even if we don't agree with them.
