The House We Live In is a film that talks about the struggles that the blacks and other immigrant faced in the United States. In the film it makes a point clear that is race does not mean anything unless it is just a social-political construct. Racism is not something that happened only in the 20th century. In the film, I learn that it is easier to become a U.S. citizen now compare to before. Back then you would have to literally be white in order to be a citizen. But now one just have to be a

Families of all different nationalities came to America to get a chance at the American Dream which is freedom, a chance for wealth, and a happy, healthy, and safe place to raise a family. Immigrants also expected equality when they came to the United States, which rarely happened. There were many stereotypes and labels put on people just because they were born in another country. A lot of this stemmed from the American government’s relationship with that country’s government. But regardless of the nation that an immigrant came from, while in America they should be treated fairly, and they should be completely equal if they are a citizen.…

To attempt to avoid this unheimlich ambiguity, the home must be a space that is defended. As stated by Sibley (1995) there is a shared desire to have a pure domestic space with no room for insecurity. The home mirrors the nation state, with both protected with the vigour. The home is a space for order and control; a conclusion which forgoes the reality of the home for many individuals. Whilst there are attempts seen within some home invasion films of problems within the home to begin with, this does not seem to be mirrored within the literature regarding domestic space.…

The United States has been known for their immense wealth in rich history. There is a very historical event that occurred between 1915 all the way to the 1960’s. The Great Migration is what it is referred as. The Great Migration was the movement of southern African Americans moving to North and West America. Just like in Richard Wright’s novel Native Son, Bigger and his family had moved to the North after Bigger’s father had been killed in a riot that occurred in the South.…

Final Paper The first movie that I chose that taught me the most about the role of American women is The Long Walk Home by Richard Pearce. The plot of this movie was about two families, one black and the other white. The mother of the black family, works for the white family as a maid and the rest of the movie's conflict involves the white women (Miriam) and her involvement with the bus boycott. The first important thing that this movie taught is how we as women need to join together to help each other get to where we want.…

Personally, I found the film The Mask You Live In very eye opening. It focuses around how young boys are taught to portray their assigned gender and how they carry the lessons they are given into manhood. From as young as six years old, a boy is taught not to show emotion; that crying and hugging and any public displays of affection towards friends or loved ones in too feminine and unmanly. Boys learn to watch their father figures and associate them as the ideal role model for masculinity. When a father shows aggression towards a woman who then starts to cry, a young boy would not initially know what to make of it, and would possibly then associate violence with being manly and strong emotions as weak and girly.…

The Apartment Film has a specific structure that creates meaning out of a series of photographs. This structure uses a specific language to create a narrative that the spectator should be able to understand. Christian Metz believes that through denotation a stronger meaning can be derived from the connotation. The study of connotation is that it is always symbolic in its nature, while denotation is the literal sense of the film. Connotative meaning should extend over the denotative meaning without contradicting it or ignoring it.…
