Ignorance of the removal of the Chagosian Islanders derived from the lack of media coverage during the ethnic cleansing of the islands. When the Chagosian Islanders were being removed from Diego Garcia, there was aa lack of media coverage because it would make the British and the United States look bad. In the film, Stealing a Nation, James Schlesinger states that “… It is being pinpointed now for reasons that I cannot ascribe to anything other than a request for certain publicity.” Since the island is considered to be the largest base the United States has outside the country, the US wants to keep the islands for themselves.
