Imagine that you work for a film company, and you think October Sky should be taught as a compulsory text for year 8 students in Australia.
Movies are a massive part of our lives. They are a great way to pass the time but can also be very educational. “October Sky”, directed by Joe Johnston, is a great example of a movie that is both entertaining and educational. Based on the autobiography, “Rocket Boys”, this story follows 16 year old Homer Hickam through his journey to become a NASA engineer. It has great characterisation, along with the amazing filming techniques, which all work together to create an engaging plot. It would be the perfect compulsory film for year 8 students to study as it would help them a lot in their future years.

The initial failed attempts of rocket launching provide a seemingly futile hope of Homer escaping the coal-miner’s life, but he preservers, and the conflict with is father makes him even more determined to succeed. When the boys where blamed for starting the forest fire and Homers father was unable to work, forcing Homer into the mines, all hope seemed lost but with the encouragement for Miss Riley and the legacy of Mr Bykovsky pushes Homer keep working toward his goal. At the climax of the film the boys successfully win the science fair and links back to the spark of Homer’s Rocketry interest, the Sputnik, with their most successful rocket launch yet. This serves as a compelling example of resilience and that anything is possible which would spark any Year 8 students
