In the beginning of the movie we see a clip of him being in his house separated from his loved ones and alone in his dark house with a blanket , we may not realize it yet but that blanket plays a key factor into his mental state. When he was born his mother died at childbirth which caused him to not get the certain affection he needed to become a man.
Towards the middle of the movie he shows a lot of symptoms of dependent personality disorder while in church he plays with his toys because he is bored. While at work his friend orders a blow up doll, to Lars the doll is a way to feel affection but still staying in his boundaries he has a problem with touching. Before the doll he was very antisocial he wanted to stay at home he sat separated at work from his friends he barely talked to his co-workers he did not want a girlfriend, but when he got the doll he met a girl named margot and even though he wanted to act like he did not like her, he truly did you could tell his emotions were opening
