Film Analysis: Casablanca

Improved Essays
The film starts with two police stating that two german officers were murdered on a train heading to Casablanca. The murderer asks Rick Blaine to hold the papers he had stolen from the officers. Rick Blaine runs a nightclub and in the beginning of World War I. The nightclub has become a safe place for refugees looking to escape to America. One day Rick’s rival Victor Laszlo and his wife Ilsa, Rick’s true love who deserted him when the Nazis invaded Paris, show up in the nightclub. Rick is very bitter to Ilsa at first, but when he finds out her reasons they decide to use the papers he received to escape to America.

I think the conflict is Ilsa because everything is fine until she shows up and then Rick want to better understand why their relationship ended so abruptly in Paris. Later the conflict is deciding whether to help her escape with Victor, or keeping her with him so they can escape together. The conflict is resolved when everyone decides to escape, but Victor and Ilsa go together and Rick and Louis escape.

This stood out because it was very interesting to see the man get taken away. It was also interesting to see that Rick would serve the refugees but not help them stay free. It related to the themes explored in the story because it showed what happened to the refugees
Another scene that stands out to me is when Ilsa tells Sam to sing the song. It stood out to me because she really wanted him to play and sing that song. I also thought is was interesting that he wasn’t allowed to play that song because it reminded him of their relationship. This related to the explored themes in the story because when they meet again he doesn’t really like her, but later a conflict rises and he has to

"Wanted" is basically from a comic book that has limited series written by Mark Miller and J.G Jones, it is about an amoral protagonist (Wesley Gibson) who is discovered as the heir of super assassin. Russian director, Timur Bekmambetov, he is the cream of the crop, he turns this comic into a movie that make the viewers not sit still and make their adrenaline and cortisone levels spike with the actions. Bekmambetov used the similar style of shots and angles with his previous movie, Night watch. It's more to wide angle (long shot), so we can see the terrifying background like one of the scenes in the torture room, where Wes has been beaten up by the butcher. Not even that, there are many special effects that Bekmambetov applies in this movie, like slow-motion with sound effects that certainly provides that "ouch" reaction from audiences.…

The flashback explains how Ilsa and Rick were split up which broke Ricks heart and gives a perfect explanation to why optimistic Rick turned into the withdrawn and cynical Rick we see at the beginning. In the flashback we even see that Rick is called Richard which could be associated with his happier side while when he is in Casablanca he is just known as Rick.
