Does that make it a “bad” film? Not necessarily. Film’s are made up of so much more than gripping plots and good storytelling, and sometimes can rely solely on cinematography and lighting to evoke feeling out of its audience. Three films that are prime examples are a A Fantastic Woman directed by Sebastian Lelio, Outside In directed by Lynn Shelton and You Were Never Really Here directed by Lynne Ramsay. Where all of these films were lacking in terms of thoroughly executing their plots and messages, they made up for in beautiful and meaningful cinematography.

This is not a film that answers questions about the storyline, rather it makes a viewer piece together information
You Were Never Really Here is film written and directed by Lynne Ramsay and is based on the book of the same name by Jonathan Ames. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as Joe, a former FBI agent with evient signs of ptsd, whos current career is to rescue trafficked girls. He takes care of his mother and is coming home from a mission when he gets a call about a life changing mission request from a well known politician. What happens next is gory, heart wrenching, and not suitable for the faint hearted.
Where the film is lacking in character and plot development, it is made up for in its cinematography. Thrilling music plays throughout the opening sequence “The film opens with an elliptical series of images: a burning photograph, scattered jewelry, a seedy motel room.” There are moments when there is eerie silence, like when Joe first saves the politician's daughter from the child prostitution ring and a viewer watches him murder men in the house through the lense of a security

The good qualities of a good movie are humor, a little drama, possibly science fiction, a good soundtrack, and a good story line. Not to mention, actors that can actually play their part well. These qualities make a movie great and worthy of being watched. Without all this, a movie would be horrible and dumb, in my opinion.…

When it comes to films there are plenty of aspects that are needed in order to complete a film to make it a great enjoyment for the viewers to be entertained. What helps a film would be the three elements of the film which are mise-en-scene, mise-en-shoot, and editing to get the film moving along. This is true for all works of film, yet some were able to use it to their advantage while others weren’t able to use one or more of these aspects. No offense to film critics, but it doesn 't take a genius to tell a good movie apart from a waste of time you 'll never get back. Motion picture films date back to the late 1800s, each film different from the last. However, that doesn 't mean everything that makes it onto a theatre is worth viewing.
